History of Island
How Island Got Its Name
The city of Island is named after a large farm from the early 1800s. This farm, owned by Judge William Worthington, was about 8 square miles (21 square kilometers) in size. It was called "The Island" because when rivers like the Green River flooded, the farm would get surrounded by water. This made it look like an island.
Post Office and Railroad
From 1829 to 1860, the local post office was named "Worthington." Later, in 1872, the Owensboro and Nashville Railroad built a train station in the area. The station and the new post office were both called "Island Station." In 1882, both names were shortened to simply "Island."
