Livermore is a small city in McLean County, Kentucky, in the United States. It is located where the Green River and Rough River meet. In 2020, about 1,230 people lived there. Livermore is part of the larger Owensboro metropolitan area.

History of Livermore

How Livermore Began

Livermore was founded in 1837 by William Brown. He first called it "Brown's Landing." A year later, a post office opened and changed the name to Livermore.

Why the Name Livermore?

There are two ideas about how Livermore got its name. Some people think it was named after a shopkeeper named James Livermore. Others believe it was named after Alonzo Livermore. He was an engineer who helped build a dam on the Green River near Rumsey. The city officially became a city in 1850.

Geography of Livermore

Livermore is in the eastern part of McLean County. It sits on the north side of the Green and Rough Rivers. Across the Rough River to the south is Ohio County.

Roads and Travel

U.S. Route 431 goes through the east side of Livermore. This highway can take you north about 20 miles (32 km) to Owensboro. It also goes south about 15 miles (24 km) to Central City.

Kentucky Route 136 runs through the northern part of Livermore. This road leads west about 9 miles (14 km) to Calhoun. Calhoun is the county seat of McLean County. It also goes east about 14 miles (23 km) to Hartford.

Land and Water Area

The city of Livermore covers about 1.04 square miles (2.70 square kilometers). Most of this area is land. Only a very small part, about 0.007 square miles (0.018 square kilometers), is water.
