The Rough River near Leitchfield, Kentucky.

The Rough River is a river in Kentucky, United States. It is about 156 miles (251 km) long. The Rough River flows into the Green River. The Green River then flows into the Ohio River. Finally, the Ohio River joins the mighty Mississippi River. This means the Rough River is part of the huge water system that drains into the Mississippi River. Long ago, people also called it "Rough Creek."

About the Rough River

The Rough River starts in the northwest part of Hardin County. It then flows mostly southwest. It passes through or along the edges of several counties. These include Grayson, Breckinridge, Ohio, and McLean counties. The river flows past the town of Hartford. It finally meets the Green River near the town of Livermore. Livermore is on the border of McLean and Ohio counties.

Rough River Lake

A dam was built on the Rough River. This dam created a large body of water called Rough River Lake. The lake is located where Breckinridge and Grayson counties meet. Another part of the river, called the North Fork Rough River, also flows into this lake. The North Fork Rough River is about 29.5 miles (47.5 km) long. It flows entirely within Breckinridge County.

Near Dundee, the Rough River usually carries about 1,169 cubic feet of water every second. This is like filling a large swimming pool very quickly!
