A Look at Italy's History
The first European settlers arrived in the area around 1790. This land was part of a large area called the Phelps and Gorham Purchase.
The town of Italy was officially created in 1815. It was formed from a part of the Town of Naples. At that time, it was still part of Ontario County. When Yates County was formed in 1823, the Town of Italy became part of this new county.
A very old and large elm tree stands in the town. Long ago, local native people used this tree as a meeting place.
Some historic buildings in Italy are listed on the National Register of Historic Places. These include the Smith McLoud House, the Italy Valley Methodist Church, and the James Fox House.
Exploring Italy's Geography
The United States Census Bureau says the town covers about 40.3 square miles (104.28 square kilometers). Most of this area, about 40.2 square miles (103.96 square kilometers), is land. Only a small part, about 0.1 square miles (0.32 square kilometers), is water.
Italy is known for its steep hills and high land areas. Two important streams flow through the town: Flint Creek and West River. West River flows southwest and eventually empties into Canandaigua Lake.
Flint Creek starts from two separate springs. These springs flow east and northeast until they join together on the valley floor. Flint Creek then flows through the town of Potter and eventually reaches Lake Ontario. Many small mills used to operate along this creek. Today, you might only find an old grindstone as a hint of these past mills.
The western edge of the town borders Ontario County. The southern edge borders Steuben County. The town is also at the southern end of Canandaigua Lake. A small part of the lake is within Italy's northern border.
