Itumeleng Khune's Club Career
Starting at Kaizer Chiefs
Khune first came to Kaizer Chiefs in 1999 for trials. He started as a striker. But during a junior game, he had chest problems and ended up being a ball boy. While diving for balls that missed the goal, he caught the eye of a youth coach, Terror Sephoa. The coach saw his potential and changed him into a goalkeeper. In 2004, he joined the club's main team.
First Team Debut and Success
Khune waited three years for a chance to play in a game. His big opportunity came in the 2007–08 season. This was after the main goalkeeper, Rowen Fernandez, left the team. The coach, Muhsin Ertugral, made Khune the number one goalkeeper. He played his first Premier Soccer League (PSL) game on August 25, 2007. His first season was very successful. He made many match-winning saves. This helped his team have the best defense in the league. They only let in 19 goals in 30 games. Khune won many individual awards that season.
Challenges and Captaincy
In his second season, Khune found it harder to play as well as he did before. Even so, Chiefs finished third in the league and won the MTN 8 cup. In the 2009–10 season, a finger injury kept Khune out of action for three months. This gave his backup, Arthur Bartman, a chance to play regularly. Around July 2014, there were rumors that Khune might move to a German club. On September 3, 2014, he was diagnosed with a serious foot injury. This injury had bothered him since February 2014. Because of this, he could not play in the 2015 African Cup of Nations. He was cleared to play again in February 2015.
In April 2015, Khune received a red card in a game against AmaZulu. He was booked for wasting time and then for disagreeing with the referee's decision. Khune later apologized for his comments about the referees. His contract with Kaizer Chiefs ended in June 2015. After a long time of discussions, he signed a new contract and returned to the club on July 30, 2015.
