Izaz Ali Amrohi (Urdu: اعزاز علی امروہوی) was an important Indian Islamic scholar. He was born in November 1882 and passed away in 1955. He held a very important position twice: he was the Grand Mufti of Darul Uloom Deoband. This is a major Islamic university. One of his famous books, Nafhat al-Arab, is still taught in many Islamic schools today, including Darul Uloom Deoband.

Izaz Ali Amrohi was born in November 1882 in a place called Amroha. He started his education early.

His Early Education

He began by studying the Quran with a teacher named Qutbuddin. He then memorized the entire Quran under Hafiz Sharfuddin. He learned Persian from his own father.

He studied basic Islamic books at Madrasa Arbi Gulshan Faiz in Tilhar. His teacher there was Maqsood Ali Khan. After that, he went to Madrasa Ayn-ul-Ilm. Here, he studied more advanced books with Qari Basheer Ahmad and Kifayatullah Dihlawi.

Studying at Darul Uloom Deoband

With the encouragement of his teachers, Izaz Ali Amrohi moved to the famous Darul Uloom Deoband. This is a very important Islamic university. There, he studied with respected scholars like Hafiz Muhammad Ahmad and Muhammad Sahool Bhagalpuri.

He spent about a year in Deoband. Then, he traveled to Meerut. In Meerut, he met Aashiq Elahi Meerthi. He stayed there to learn more about Arabic poetry and Islamic law from him. He also studied logic and philosophy with Abdul Momin Deobandi.

Later, he returned to Deoband. He completed his studies with Mahmud Hasan Deobandi, who was a very influential scholar. He specialized in Islamic jurisprudence (understanding Islamic law) with Azizur Rahman Usmani. He also focused on Arabic literature with Muizuddin Ahmad. He finally graduated from Darul Uloom Deoband in 1903.

His Teaching Career

After graduating, Izaz Ali Amrohi became a teacher.

Teaching in Other Cities

His teacher, Mahmud Hasan Deobandi, sent him to Madrassa Nomaniyah in Pureni, Bhagalpur. He taught there for more than seven years. After that, he moved to Shahjahanpur. He started his own school there called Afzal al-Madaris. He taught at this school for about three years without taking any money.

Teaching at Darul Uloom Deoband

In 1911, Izaz Ali Amrohi was appointed as a teacher at Darul Uloom Deoband. In his first year, he taught basic Arabic books. He taught at Darul Uloom Deoband for over 44 years.

He held the important position of Grand Mufti of Darul Uloom Deoband twice.

  • First time: From 1928 to 1929.
  • Second time: From 1944 to 1946.

As Grand Mufti, he was responsible for giving religious opinions, known as fatwas. He issued about 24,855 fatwas during his time. He also taught important Islamic texts, including Sahih al-Bukhari and Tirmidhi. Many students learned from him, including famous scholars like Muhammad Shafi Deobandi and Anzar Shah Kashmiri.

His Passing

Izaz Ali Amrohi passed away in 1955. He was buried in the Qasmi graveyard at Darul Uloom Deoband. One of his students, Anzar Shah Kashmiri, wrote a book about his life called Tadhkiratul Izaz.

Nafhat al-Arab

His most famous book is Nafhat al-Arab. This book is part of the regular curriculum in many Islamic schools today, including Darul Uloom Deoband. It is highly respected for its teachings.
