Early Life and Learning
Jack Ma was born in Hangzhou, China, on September 10, 1964. His birth name was Ma Yun. When he was young, he loved learning English. He would practice with visitors at a local hotel. At 12, he bought a radio to listen to English stations. For nine years, he rode his bike 17 miles (27 km) every day. He worked as a tour guide in Hangzhou to practice speaking English with foreigners. One of these foreigners became his pen pal and gave him the nickname "Jack." This was because his Chinese name was hard to say.
When Jack Ma was 13, he had to change schools because he often got into fights. He found school hard, especially math. It took him two years to get into a regular high school. He only scored 31 points in math on the entrance exam.
In 1980, Jack Ma met Ken Morley and his family from Australia. Ken's son, David, became Jack's pen pal. Years later, the Morleys invited Jack to visit them in Australia. Jack later said that those 29 days in Australia changed his life. He felt they helped him think differently.
Jack Ma tried to get into college three times. In 1982, he failed his first college entrance exam, scoring only 1 point in math. He tried to get a job as a waiter but was rejected. In 1983, he failed the exam again, but his math score improved to 19 points. In 1984, he tried a third time. He scored 89 points in math, a big improvement. Even though his score was still a bit low, he got into Hangzhou Normal University. This happened because the English department needed more students.
Once in college, Jack Ma did very well. He became one of the top students in the foreign language department. He was also chosen to lead the student union. In 1988, he earned his degree in English. After graduating, he became an English and international trade teacher. Jack Ma also says he applied to Harvard Business School ten times but was always turned down.
Starting His Business Journey
First Steps in Business
After finishing college in 1988, Jack Ma tried to get 31 different entry-level jobs. He was rejected from every one. He even tried to get a job at KFC when it came to his city. Twenty-four people applied, and 23 were hired. Jack Ma was the only one rejected.
In 1994, Jack Ma learned about the internet. He also started his first company, a translation agency. In early 1995, he traveled to the United States. There, he saw how the internet worked. He noticed there was no information about China online. So, he and a friend made a simple website about Chinese beer. He launched the website, and within hours, he got emails from people in China wanting to know more. This made him realize the internet's huge potential.
In April 1995, Jack Ma and his partner opened an office for their second company, China Pages. They registered the website chinapages.com. In three years, China Pages made about 5 million Chinese yuan. This was a lot of money at the time. Jack Ma also helped Chinese companies build their own websites. He remembered how slow the internet was back then. He said it took three and a half hours to load half a page. But he was proud because he showed that the internet was real.
From 1998 to 1999, Jack Ma led an information technology company for the Chinese government. In 1999, he left that job. He went back to Hangzhou with his team of 18 friends. In his apartment, they started Alibaba Group. It was an online marketplace where businesses could sell to other businesses. They started with about 500,000 yuan.
In late 1999 and early 2000, Alibaba received $25 million from investors. This money helped Alibaba grow and improve online shopping for Chinese businesses. Alibaba started making a profit three years later. Jack Ma wanted to make the global online shopping system better. Since 2003, he also started other popular services like Taobao Marketplace, Alipay, and Tmall. When the American company eBay wanted to buy Taobao, Jack Ma said no. Instead, he got a $1 billion investment from Yahoo co-founder Jerry Yang. This helped Alibaba grow even more.

Jack Ma announced on September 10, 2018, that he would step down as executive chairman of Alibaba Group. He said he wanted to focus on helping others through his foundation. Daniel Zhang took over his role. Jack Ma left the board of Alibaba on October 1, 2020.
During Tech Changes
Between October 2020 and January 2021, Jack Ma was not seen much in public. This happened during a time when the Chinese government was making new rules for tech companies.
