Jacques Barrot (born 3 February 1937 – died 3 December 2014) was a French politician. He held important roles in the European Commission, which is like the government of the European Union. He was a Commissioner for Justice, Transport, and Regional Policy. He also served as one of the Vice-Presidents of the European Commission.

Before his work in Europe, Jacques Barrot held many different jobs as a minister in the French government. He was a member of the political party called the UMP. The European Parliament officially approved him for his European roles.

In 2004, he became a European Commissioner. He first worked on Regional Policy. Later, he became a Vice-President and the Commissioner for Transport.

There was a discussion about something that happened in his past. A special pardon from the French President in 1995 had resolved this matter. When he was approved for his European role, some people felt he should have mentioned this pardon. However, after a lot of discussion, most people agreed that he was not legally required to share this information. So, he continued his work.

Key Projects in Europe

During his time as Commissioner for Transport, Jacques Barrot worked on several big projects.

Galileo Positioning System

One major project was the Galileo positioning system. This is a global navigation satellite system, similar to GPS. It helps people find their way around. Work on Galileo started before he took office. He helped it develop further, including the launch of the first satellite. He wanted more money from the EU budget to help the project succeed.

Air Travel and European Sky

He also worked on making sure air passengers had rights. This meant protecting travelers when flights were delayed or cancelled. Another important project was the Single European Sky. This plan aimed to make air travel across Europe more efficient and safer. It helped manage air traffic better across different countries.
