Jacques Barrot (born 3 February 1937 – died 3 December 2014) was a French politician. He held important roles in the European Commission, which is like the government of the European Union. He was a Commissioner for Justice, Transport, and Regional Policy. He also served as one of the Vice-Presidents of the European Commission.
Before his work in Europe, Jacques Barrot held many different jobs as a minister in the French government. He was a member of the political party called the UMP. The European Parliament officially approved him for his European roles.
In 2004, he became a European Commissioner. He first worked on Regional Policy. Later, he became a Vice-President and the Commissioner for Transport.
There was a discussion about something that happened in his past. A special pardon from the French President in 1995 had resolved this matter. When he was approved for his European role, some people felt he should have mentioned this pardon. However, after a lot of discussion, most people agreed that he was not legally required to share this information. So, he continued his work.
