James Streshly Jackson (born September 27, 1823 – died October 8, 1862) was an important person from Kentucky. He was a U.S. Representative, which means he was a politician who helped make laws for the country. He also became a high-ranking officer, a brigadier general, in the Union Army during the American Civil War.

James Jackson's Life Story
James Streshly Jackson was born in Fayette County, Kentucky. He went to college at Centre College in Danville, Kentucky. Later, he graduated from Jefferson College in Pennsylvania in 1844. The next year, he finished law school at Transylvania University in Lexington, Kentucky. After his studies, he became a lawyer and started working in Greenupsburg, Kentucky.
Serving in the Mexican-American War
When the Mexican–American War began, James Jackson joined the army on June 9, 1846. He started as a private in the 1st Kentucky Cavalry. Just one month later, he was chosen to be a third lieutenant. He left the army on October 10, 1846.
From Politics to the Civil War
In 1859, James Jackson moved to Hopkinsville. He was elected to the Thirty-seventh Congress as a Unionist. This meant he supported keeping the United States together. He served in Congress from March 4 to December 13, 1861. Then, he decided to leave Congress to join the Union Army and fight in the American Civil War.
A General in the Union Army
James Jackson helped create a cavalry company, which is a group of soldiers who fight on horseback. He was chosen to be the colonel of the 3rd Regiment Kentucky Volunteer Cavalry. This group was formed on December 13, 1861.
He was promoted to brigadier general on July 16, 1862. This was a very important rank. General Jackson was then put in charge of the 10th Division in the Army of the Ohio.
His Final Battle
James Streshly Jackson was killed in action on October 8, 1862. This happened during the Battle of Perryville, a major battle of the Civil War. He was first buried in Louisville, but his body was later moved. On March 24, 1863, he was reburied at Riverside Cemetery in Hopkinsville, Kentucky.
