James Shields (born April 13, 1762 – died August 13, 1831) was an important politician from Ohio. He served as a U.S. Representative, which means he was a member of the United States Congress. He held this position for one term, from 1829 to 1831.

Early Life and Education

James Shields was born in a place called Banbridge, in County Down, which was part of the Kingdom of Ireland at the time. His family was known as the Ó Siadhail family.

He received a good education during his younger years. In 1782, he started studying at the University of Glasgow in Scotland. He worked hard and graduated from the university in 1786. After that, he spent two years studying medicine.

Moving to America

In July 1791, James Shields decided to move to the United States. He first settled in Frederick County, Virginia, where he worked as a school teacher.

A few years later, in 1801, he moved to Butler County, Ohio. However, he soon returned to Virginia. In 1804, he officially became a citizen of the United States.

Political Career

James Shields moved back to Ohio in 1807. He became very active in politics there.

Serving in Ohio

He was elected to the Ohio House of Representatives, which is like the state's law-making body. He served many terms in this role between 1806 and 1827.

In 1828, he was chosen as an elector for Andrew Jackson. This meant he helped formally elect Andrew Jackson as president.

In the U.S. Congress

Because he supported Andrew Jackson, James Shields was elected to the 21st United States Congress. He served as a U.S. Representative for Ohio from March 4, 1829, to March 3, 1831.

Later Life and Legacy

Sadly, James Shields passed away on August 13, 1831. He was involved in an accident where a stagecoach overturned near Venice, Ohio, in Butler County.

He was buried in the Venice Cemetery in Venice, Ohio. Interestingly, James Shields was also the uncle of another famous politician named James Shields, who later became a U.S. Senator.
