Jane and the Dragon is a fun animated TV show. It uses CGI to bring its characters to life. The series is based on books by Martin Baynton. It was made by Weta Workshop in New Zealand and Nelvana in Canada.

The show is about Jane, a young girl who wants to be a knight. Her best friend is Dragon, a talking, flying, fire-breathing dragon. Together, they go on many funny adventures.

The show first aired on YTV in Canada. It also played on ABC in Australia. In the USA, it was on Qubo until 2021. You can also find it on Disney Junior and Treehouse TV.

About the Series: Jane's Knightly Adventures

Jane is a red-haired girl living in a castle. This castle is in a fictional kingdom called Kippernium. Jane was supposed to become a lady-in-waiting, which is like a helper to the Queen. But Jane always dreamed of becoming a knight!

One day, the prince was taken by a dragon. Jane bravely went to rescue him. She planned to fight the dragon. But when she met the dragon, they became best friends instead! Because Jane saved the prince, the King made her a knight apprentice. This means she started training to be a knight. The show follows Jane's training and her adventures with Dragon.

Life in Kippernium Castle

The series shows Jane's daily life. It also shows her interactions with everyone in the castle. The stories teach important lessons. These include being honest, loyal, and brave. They also teach about friendship. Jane sometimes makes mistakes, but everything always ends well.

As a knight apprentice, Jane has many tasks. Her teacher is the wise Sir Theodore. Another knight, Sir Ivon, has his own apprentice named Gunther. Jane sees Gunther as a rival.

Dragon helps Jane with her training. He lets her ride on his back when she patrols the kingdom. Jane also helps Dragon. He is an orphan and wants to learn about his family.

Jane's Friends and Family

Jane has many friends in the castle. Jester is the royal jester, who makes everyone laugh. Pepper is the castle cook. Rake is the castle gardener. Smithy is the blacksmith and takes care of the horses.

The King and Queen also live in the castle. They have two children, Prince Cuthbert and Princess Lavinia. Jane's parents live there too. There's also a wizard who lives in a tower. He is never seen, but he knows a lot about magic. The younger castle staff are a bit scared of him.

The show uses fun, made-up words when characters get frustrated. For example, Jane might say "Maggots!" This encourages kids to be creative with their own words.

Meet the Characters

The characters in the show are voiced by Canadian actors.

  • Jane Turnkey is a brave and adventurous girl. She dreams of becoming a knight. Jane found her special sword in Dragon's cave. This sword can cut through dragon skin. But Jane uses it only to protect Dragon. The sword's handle is also a whistle. Jane can use it to call Dragon from far away. Jane's horse is named Cleva.
  • Milton Turnkey is Jane's father. He is the royal Chamberlain. This means he handles the kingdom's money. He is very smart and humble. He loves his family and supports Jane. He can get stressed by money issues or the Merchant's tricks.
  • Adeline Turnkey is Jane's mother. She is the Queen's Lady-in-Waiting. She wants Jane to follow in her footsteps. She sometimes worries about Jane's knight training. She also doesn't always like Jane's tomboyish style.
  • Dragon is Jane's best friend. He is a very old, flying, fire-breathing creature. He is kind and has a childlike personality. Dragon is an orphan and wants to learn about other dragons. He can fly because he stores gas in his body. This gas also fuels his fire breath. He is very protective of Jane. Dragon is also a great singer, but he doesn't like to admit it! He loves cows and finds them funny.
  • Jester is the King's royal jester. He is very talented at singing, dancing, and making people laugh. He is Jane's closest human friend. He is very loyal and helps Jane with her knight training. Jester has a secret real name.
  • Jethro "Smithy" Junior is the castle blacksmith. He fixes armor and keeps swords sharp. He is calm, caring, and quiet. Smithy is good with animals, except for Dragon. He has a pet pig named Pig. Pig helps him by running on a wheel to pump air for his fire.
  • Verbena "Pepper" Salter is the castle cook. She works long hours in the kitchen. Pepper loves cooking and trying new recipes. She is a bit shy but always helps her friends. She is close to Rake.
  • Drake "Rake" Gardener Junior is the royal gardener. He loves growing plants and making compost. He rarely leaves the castle walls. Rake is a bit afraid of heights and the wizard. He and Pepper seem to like each other a lot.
  • Gunther Breech is another knight apprentice. He is Jane's rival. Gunther's father is a merchant. Gunther tries to balance his loyalty to his father with the knight's code of honor. He is strong but not as good with people as Jane. He is secretly jealous of Jane.
  • Magnus Breech is Gunther's father. He is a rich merchant. He is greedy and tries to trick people for money. He doesn't like Dragon and always tries to get him to leave.
  • King Caradoc is the King of Kippernium. He is good-humored but prefers hunting and dancing over royal duties. He can be a bit childish sometimes. But he is wise when needed. He loves his family and his people.
  • Queen Gwendolyn is the Queen. She is kind and gentle. She wants a peaceful world for her children. She also cares about how she looks.
  • Prince Cuthbert is the King's son. He is the heir to the kingdom. He can be a bit selfish and hard to impress. He was kidnapped by Dragon before the show started. This led to Jane and Dragon becoming friends. He likes animals and doesn't like hunting.
  • Princess Lavinia is the King's daughter. She is a sweet and caring girl. She looks up to Jane and sometimes wants to be a knight too. Smithy made her costume dragon wings so she can pretend to be a dragon. She also loves animals.
  • Sir Theodore Boarmaster is Jane's wise mentor. He was best friends with Jane's grandfather, who was also a knight. His family used to hunt dragons. He has a trained falcon named Trencher.
  • Sir Ivon Mackay is Gunther's mentor. He is loud and loves weapons. He invents many gadgets, but they never work. He can be impatient but has a kind heart.
