Jasmine S. Murray (born December 12, 1991) is a talented singer and beauty queen from the United States. She is known for singing Christian music. Many people first learned about her when she was a finalist on the TV show American Idol. She also won the title of Miss Mississippi in 2014.

Early life

Jasmine Murray was born in Columbus, Mississippi. She later moved to Starkville with her family. She is the youngest of five children. When Jasmine was born, she had a very difficult start. Doctors were worried she might not survive. She stayed in the hospital for almost a month, fighting to get healthy.

Jasmine started singing when she was just three years old. Her family says she would always sing along to the radio in the car. This shows how much she loved music from a young age. Before becoming famous on American Idol, she competed in a scholarship pageant called Miss America's Outstanding Teen. She also studied at the Mississippi School of the Arts. She graduated from there in 2010.

Career

Miss America's Outstanding Teen

Jasmine first competed in the Miss Mississippi's Outstanding Teen pageant in 2006. She won an award for activewear and placed fourth overall. The next year, she won the main title of Miss Mississippi's Outstanding Teen.

In August of that year, she represented Mississippi in the national Miss America's Outstanding Teen pageant. This is a version of the famous Miss America pageant for teenagers. Jasmine placed in the top ten at this national competition. Later, in 2008, she won a scholarship for former contestants.

American Idol

Jasmine auditioned for the eighth season of American Idol in Jacksonville, Florida. She sang "Big Girls Don't Cry" by Fergie. During the Hollywood rounds, her group sang "Mercy" by Duffy.

She then sang "Love Song" by Sara Bareilles. The judges were not very impressed with her song choice. Judge Randy Jackson suggested she should have picked a song by Rihanna.

Jasmine was first eliminated in the semi-finals. However, the judges brought her back for a special "wild card" round. They chose her to join the Top 13 finalists. During the Top 13 week, she performed "I'll Be There" by The Jackson 5. Judge Simon Cowell said her performance was "a little bit robotic."

Jasmine was one of the first two contestants eliminated in the finals. She was eliminated along with Jorge Núñez. This meant she did not get to go on the annual summer tour with the other finalists. Jasmine was the only finalist from Mississippi for a long time. Later, Skylar Laine from season 11 also became a finalist.

After American Idol

After American Idol, Jasmine appeared on TV shows like The Ellen DeGeneres Show. She also performed at different events. She sang songs by famous artists like Beyoncé, Jordin Sparks, and Rihanna. She also performed at the Miss America's Outstanding Teen pageant again.

Jasmine is now a popular performer at pageants and sports events. She has worked with experienced songwriters in Nashville, Tennessee. She even sang the national anthem at a Michigan State basketball game.

In 2012, Jasmine won the title of Miss Spirit of the South. She then competed in the Miss Mississippi 2012 pageant and was the first runner-up. She also visited and performed for patients at Batson Children's Hospital in Jackson, Mississippi. Later that year, she was crowned Miss Mississippi State University.

In July 2014, Jasmine competed in the Miss Mississippi pageant for the third time. She was crowned Miss Mississippi 2014 on July 12. She also won a $10,000 scholarship.

Jasmine's special project as Miss Mississippi was called "13 Going on 30." This project aimed to teach young girls to enjoy their age. She then competed in the Miss America 2015 pageant in Atlantic City, New Jersey. She placed in the top 10 at this national competition.
