Jeremy Wade's Early Life and Education
Jeremy Wade grew up in a village called Nayland, in England. His father was a vicar there. Jeremy went to Dean Close School. He later studied zoology (the study of animals) at University of Bristol. He also earned a teaching certificate in biology from the University of Kent. For a while, he worked as a biology teacher in Kent.
During his many adventures around the world, Jeremy has faced some tough situations. He has gotten sick with malaria and survived a plane accident. He is very good at speaking Portuguese, which he learned while fishing in Brazil. He also knows how to speak French and Spanish.
Jeremy's Amazing Fishing Adventures
Jeremy Wade became interested in fishing when he was very young. He started fishing as a child near his home in East Anglia, on the banks of the River Stour. He said that the river flowing through his village made him want to explore it, just like people near mountains want to climb them. His first tries at fishing when he was seven or eight years old were not successful. But then a school friend helped him, and after catching his first fish, he loved it. His parents were happy for him to spend all day outside. A big part of his fishing was always wanting to find new places, and he still loves to explore today.
First Trips Abroad
In 1982, Jeremy took his first trip outside of England. He went to the mountain rivers of India. He remembers this trip as being very difficult. He only had about £200 (around $265 USD) to last him three months. But he managed to catch some fish, like the Himalayan mahseer, which weighed up to 18 pounds. When he came back to England, Jeremy wrote some articles about his experiences in India for a fishing magazine. He felt a real sense of accomplishment, even though traveling was basic and uncomfortable. He immediately started saving money to go somewhere else. He knew there must be other amazing fish out there, even if they weren't as well-known as the Mahseer.
How River Monsters Began
The idea for his famous TV show, River Monsters, came to Jeremy during another trip to India in 2005. He was in the Himalayan foothills. He heard stories from local people that some individuals had gone missing in the river. Jeremy started to investigate these stories. Locals believed a giant fish was responsible. He realized this could make a fascinating TV show, not just for people who like fishing, but for everyone. The fish turned out to be the Goonch catfish. Jeremy caught a huge 161-pound Goonch in an epic struggle for that episode.
Jeremy has made many trips to the Congo and Amazon rainforests. With help from local fishers, he travels the world to find and catch different kinds of fish.

Jeremy Wade wrote his first book, Somewhere Down the Crazy River, with Paul Boote in 1992. He also wrote another book called River Monsters, which tells about his hunts and journeys around the world.

In 2016, while filming on a faraway island near Australia, Jeremy and his team found a man who was stranded. The man, named Tremaine, had lost his boat while looking for oysters and had been stuck on the island for two days before Jeremy and his crew discovered him.
