Jhonas Enroth's Hockey Journey
Jhonas Enroth was chosen by the Buffalo Sabres on June 24, 2006. He was their second pick in the 2006 NHL Entry Draft, chosen 46th overall.
Starting in Sweden
In 2007, Enroth was a top candidate for the "Rookie of the Year" award in the Elitserien. He finished the 2007–08 season as the best goaltender in Sweden. He had the best save percentage and goals against average. On May 31, 2008, Enroth signed a three-year contract with the Buffalo Sabres. This was his first step toward playing in the NHL.
Joining the NHL
Enroth first joined the Buffalo Sabres in February 2009. He was called up from their minor league team, the Portland Pirates. He made his first NHL appearance on November 7, 2009, playing against the Boston Bruins.
Jhonas got his first NHL win on November 6, 2010, against the Toronto Maple Leafs. It was a close game that went to a shootout. He won his second NHL game in a shootout too, against the New Jersey Devils. His third win also came in a shootout. This made him the first NHL goalie to win his first three games all in shootouts!
On March 30, 2011, Enroth achieved his first NHL shutout. This means he stopped every shot the New York Rangers took against him. He was even named one of the NHL's "three stars" for that week. In April 2011, he played in his first NHL playoff game. In 2012, Enroth was named to the NHL All-Rookie Team. This is a special team for the best new players in the league.
Playing During the Lockout
During the 2012–13 NHL lockout, Enroth stayed in Sweden. He played for two different Swedish teams, Huddinge IK and Almtuna IS. This helped him stay sharp until the NHL season started again.
Becoming a Starter
On June 20, 2013, Enroth signed a new two-year deal with the Sabres. He became the main starting goaltender for the Sabres on February 28, 2014. This happened after the team traded their previous starter, Ryan Miller.
Moving to Other Teams
On February 11, 2015, Enroth was traded to the Dallas Stars. He then signed a one-year contract with the Los Angeles Kings on July 1, 2015. He was a backup goalie there. Even though he played well, he didn't get much playing time.
In August 2016, Enroth signed with the Toronto Maple Leafs. He was meant to be a backup goalie there too. However, he struggled with the Maple Leafs and was later traded to the Anaheim Ducks.
Playing Overseas
After his time in the NHL, Enroth decided to play hockey in other countries. On July 13, 2017, he signed a one-year deal with HC Dinamo Minsk in Belarus. This team plays in the Kontinental Hockey League (KHL). He played two seasons there.
In February 2019, Enroth returned to Sweden to play for Örebro HK in the SHL. He went back to Dinamo Minsk for another season in 2019. Then, in February 2020, he joined EC KAC in Austria. He is now back playing for Örebro HK in Sweden.
