James Martin Barnes (born April 8, 1886 – died May 24, 1966) was a very important golfer in the early days of professional golf in the United States. He was one of only three British golfers to win three different major championships. These championships are some of the biggest tournaments in golf.

Early Life and Start in Golf
Barnes was born in Lelant, Cornwall, England. Like many golfers back then, he started working young. He was a caddie (someone who carries golf clubs for players) and learned how to make golf clubs.
In 1906, he moved to the United States and became a professional golfer. He never became an American citizen. He worked at golf clubs in different cities like San Francisco, Vancouver, British Columbia, Spokane, Washington, and Tacoma, Washington. He also worked at The Broadmoor in Colorado Springs, Colorado.
Jim Barnes' Golf Career
From 1923 to 1926, Jim Barnes was the main golf professional at the Temple Terrace Golf and Country Club in Temple Terrace, Florida. This club hosted big tournaments like the 1925 and 1926 Florida Opens. These events had many top golfers and large cash prizes.
Barnes was often called "Long Jim" because he was very tall, standing at 6 feet 4 inches. He later lived in Oakland, California, for many years. Jim Barnes also wrote several books about how to play golf better. He passed away at the age of 80 in East Orange, New Jersey.
Major Championship Wins
Jim Barnes won nine major golf titles during his career. Four of these were the "modern" major professional championships. At the time, some golf experts also considered the Western Open and North and South Open titles as major wins.
Here are the modern major championships he won:
- PGA Championship: 1916, 1919
- U.S. Open: 1921
- The Open Championship: 1925
His first two PGA Championship wins were the very first ones ever held for that event. There were no tournaments in 1917 or 1918 because of World War I. In the 1921 U.S. Open, Barnes won by a huge nine strokes. This record for the biggest winning margin was not broken until Tiger Woods won by 15 strokes in 2000.
PGA Tour Success
Barnes was one of the most successful golfers in the early years of the PGA Tour, which started in 1916. He won 22 times on the tour in total. He led the tour in wins in four different seasons:
- 1916 (3 wins)
- 1917 (2 wins, shared with Mike Brady)
- 1919 (5 wins)
- 1921 (4 wins)
In 1937, he won the Long Island Open. This was special because it was the first PGA Tour win by a golfer over 50 years old.
Awards and Recognition
In 1940, Jim Barnes was honored as one of the first 12 golfers to be put into the PGA's Hall of Fame. Later, in 1989, he was also added to the World Golf Hall of Fame.
