James Hardin Younger (born January 15, 1848 – died October 19, 1902) was an American outlaw who was part of the famous James–Younger Gang. He was the brother of Cole, John, and Bob Younger.

Early Life and the Civil War

Jim Younger was born in Missouri on January 15, 1848. He was one of fourteen children born to Henry Washington Younger and Bersheba Leighton Fristoe. When the American Civil War began, Jim and his brother Cole joined the Confederate Army. In 1864, Jim became part of a group called Quantrill's Raiders.

Later, Jim was captured by Union soldiers. This happened during the same event where William Quantrill died. Jim was held in prison until the war ended.

Life After the War

After the Civil War, Jim tried different jobs. He even started a horse ranch. In 1873, he joined the James–Younger Gang. This group was started by his brother Cole, along with Frank and Jesse James.

It's not clear how long Jim stayed with the gang. However, he was there when his brother John was killed by Pinkerton detectives in Roscoe, Missouri in 1874. After this, Jim left the gang. He spent the next two years working on a ranch in California.

Return to the Gang and Later Life

Jim rejoined the James–Younger Gang in 1876. He took part in a bank robbery in Northfield, Minnesota, which did not go well. During this event, Jim was shot in the jaw. He was captured and sentenced to spend his life in prison.

In 1901, Jim was released from prison. His brother Cole was also set free at the same time. After his release, Jim became engaged to a woman named Alix Mueller. She had met him while he was in prison, about 20 years after the Northfield robbery. However, Jim could not marry her because of the rules of his parole. Jim Younger died on October 19, 1902. His body was brought back to Lee's Summit, Missouri for burial.
