James William Ward (born September 1, 1906, in Fort William, Ontario, Canada – died November 15, 1990, in Portland, Oregon, USA) was a talented right winger in the NHL. The NHL is the top professional ice hockey league in North America. He played from the 1928 season until 1939.

Did you know that Jimmy Ward's son, Pete Ward, became a professional baseball player? Pete played for nine seasons and won the TSN Rookie Of The Year award in 1963 while playing for the Chicago White Sox.

Playing Career

Jimmy Ward spent his entire NHL career playing in Montreal, Canada. He started with the Montreal Maroons in the 1928 season. He stayed with this team until they stopped playing after the 1938 season.

During his time with the Maroons, Jimmy was a strong scorer. He scored 10 or more goals in 10 out of 11 seasons. This was impressive because the regular season back then was only 48 games long!

He achieved a major victory by winning the Stanley Cup in 1935. The Stanley Cup is one of the oldest and most famous trophies in sports. Jimmy also played in two special games: the Ace Bailey Benefit Game in 1934 and the Howie Morenz Memorial Game in 1937. These games were played to help players or honor their memory.

After the Maroons team closed down, Jimmy joined their rivals, the Montreal Canadiens, for the 1939 season.

Coaching Career

After his playing days, Jimmy Ward also became a coach. In 1940, he was a player/coach for the New Haven Eagles in the IAHL. This meant he played on the team while also helping to lead and train his teammates.

Later, he became the head coach for two different teams in the PCHL: the Portland Eagles and the Portland Penguins.
