The Johan Cruyff Shield is a special football trophy in the Netherlands. It's named after the famous Dutch footballer Johan Cruyff. People often call it the Dutch Super Cup.
This exciting trophy is decided in just one match. The game is played between the team that wins the national football league, called the Eredivisie, and the team that wins the national KNVB Cup. If one team wins both the Eredivisie and the KNVB Cup, then they play against the team that finished second in the league.

What the Trophy Looks Like
The Johan Cruyff Shield is a big, shiny silver plate. It is about 60 centimeters wide. It looks a lot like the trophies given to the Eredivisie champions.
The trophy has special words carved into it:
- At the top, it says "Johan Cruijff Schaal XV" (or a different Roman numeral for the year). Notice it uses 'ij' for Cruijff, which is the Dutch spelling.
- In the middle, it says "KNVB" (which stands for the Royal Dutch Football Association) and the date of the match.
- At the bottom, it shows the names of the two teams that played in that specific match. The league champion's name is listed second.
How the Competition Started
Early Super Cup Matches
The very first Super Cup match was played a long time ago, on June 25, 1949. In that game, SVV, who were the league champions, beat Quick 1888, the cup winners, by a score of 2–0.
The Dutch Football Association brought the competition back in 1991. It was first called the PTT Telecom Cup. These matches were always played at the De Kuip stadium in Rotterdam. After three years, the sponsor left, and the competition went back to being called the Super Cup.
Becoming the Johan Cruyff Shield
In 1996, the competition changed its name to the Johan Cruyff Schaal, which means Johan Cruyff Shield in Dutch. It also moved to the Amsterdam Arena stadium.
In 2003, something unusual happened. Fans of both teams, FC Utrecht and PSV Eindhoven, were not happy. Many fans stayed away from the stadium. Utrecht fans complained about strict travel rules. PSV fans were unhappy with their assigned seats. Only 700 tickets were sold out of 13,000! The winning team in 2003 received €135,000.
In 2004, Ajax played against FC Utrecht. Utrecht made an amazing comeback, winning 4–2 after being behind 1–2 until the 85th minute! Thirty-three thousand fans watched this exciting game.
Since 2017, the match is played at the home stadium of the Eredivisie champions. This makes it special for the league winners.
