John Pinto (born December 15, 1924 – died May 24, 2019) was an important American politician. He was a member of the Democratic Party. He served in the New Mexico Senate from 1977 until he passed away in 2019.
Early Life and Education
John Pinto was born in Lupton, Arizona. This area is part of the Navajo Nation. He went to the University of New Mexico. There, he earned two degrees: a Bachelor of Science and a Master of Arts.
A Life of Service
Pinto was a brave soldier during World War II. He served in the United States Marine Corps. He was also a special Navajo code talker. These code talkers used their native language to send secret messages. This helped the United States win the war.
After leaving the military, Pinto became a teacher. He also worked as an organizer for the National Education Association. This group supports teachers and public education.
His Political Career
John Pinto was elected to the New Mexico Senate in 1977. He represented the 3rd district. This district includes the Four Corners area. It covers much of western San Juan County. It also includes part of western McKinley County.
A large part of his district is within the Navajo Nation. It includes towns like Shiprock and Sheep Springs. Part of Gallup is also in his district. At 94 years old, he was the longest-serving member in the New Mexico Senate.
Later Life
John Pinto passed away in office on May 24, 2019. He was 94 years old. He died in Gallup, New Mexico. His granddaughter, Shannon Pinto, took his place in the Senate.
