John Rannahan (born 1836 – died June 1, 1892) was a brave soldier in the U.S. Marine Corps. He served during the American Civil War. Rannahan was a corporal on the ship USS Minnesota. He earned the highest military award, the Medal of Honor. This was for his actions during the Second Battle of Fort Fisher on January 15, 1865.

Joining the Marines
John Rannahan joined the Marine Corps in June 1861. He signed up in Philadelphia. He was then sent to serve on a large warship called the USS Minnesota. This ship was part of the Union Navy during the American Civil War.
The Battle of Fort Fisher
On January 15, 1865, a very important battle happened. Union forces attacked Fort Fisher in North Carolina. This fort was a strong base for the Confederates. A large group of Union sailors, marines, and soldiers attacked the fort. They were led by Admiral David Dixon Porter and General Alfred Terry.
John Rannahan showed great courage during this battle. Because of his brave actions, he received the Medal of Honor. This is the highest award for military bravery. He was one of nine crew members from the USS Minnesota to earn this special award. John Rannahan left the military later that same month.
