John Stewart Herrington (born May 31, 1939) is an American politician and businessman. He is a member of the Republican Party. He served as the fifth United States Secretary of Energy during Ronald Reagan's second term as president.

Early Life and Education
John Herrington was born in Los Angeles, California, on May 31, 1939. He went to Stanford University and earned his Bachelor of Arts degree in 1961. While at Stanford, he joined the Delta Upsilon fraternity. Later, he studied law at the University of California School of Law (Hastings College), getting his law degree in 1964.
Career in Law and Government
After finishing law school, Herrington worked as a private lawyer from 1965 to 1981. Most of his work was in San Francisco. He also worked as a public lawyer, serving as a deputy district attorney for Ventura County.
In the Reagan Administration, John Herrington held several important roles. From 1981 to 1983, he was the Assistant Secretary of the Navy (Manpower and Reserve Affairs). This job involved managing people and reserve forces for the Navy. He then worked as a deputy assistant for presidential personnel from 1983 to 1985.
Secretary of Energy
From 1985 to 1989, Herrington served as the United States Secretary of Energy. This is a very important job in the U.S. government. The Secretary of Energy is in charge of the United States Department of Energy. This department works on energy policy, nuclear safety, and scientific research for the country.
Life After Government
After leaving government service, John Herrington became the Chairman of Harcourt, Brace, Jovanovich, Inc., which was a large publishing company. He has also stayed involved in politics in his home state of California. For a time, he was the Chairman of the California Republican Party.
Herrington also has business interests. He owns Vic Stewart's, a well-known steakhouse, with locations in Contra Costa County, specifically in Walnut Creek and Brentwood. He also works in real estate development and advises many different companies.
Political Involvement
John Herrington continues to be active in politics. In the 2016 Republican Party presidential primaries, he supported Ted Cruz for president. He also supported the choice of former Texas Governor Rick Perry to become the United States Secretary of Energy in December 2016.

John Herrington is married to Lois Haight. They have two children together.
