Jonathan Joel Babineaux, born on October 12, 1981, is a former American football player. He spent his whole 12-year career playing as a defensive tackle for the Atlanta Falcons. The Falcons are a team in the National Football League (NFL). Before joining the pros, he played college football for the Iowa Hawkeyes. The Falcons chose him in the second round of the 2005 NFL draft.

Early Life and High School Sports
Jonathan Babineaux grew up in Port Arthur, Texas. He went to Lincoln High School there. In high school, he was a star athlete.
He was the team captain for the Bumble Bees football team. He played as a linebacker and was chosen as a first-team All-Conference player. Jonathan was also a great punter, kicking the ball an average of 40 yards per punt.
Beyond football, he was also good at basketball. He helped his team become the best in the state of Texas. Jonathan also played baseball, golf, and competed in track and field.
College Football Career
After high school, Babineaux went to the University of Iowa. He played college football for the Iowa Hawkeyes from 2000 to 2004.
During his time in college, he made 131 tackles. A tackle is when a defensive player stops the player with the ball. He also had 19 sacks, which means he tackled the opposing team's quarterback behind the line of scrimmage.
He also caused four fumbles (when a player drops the ball) and recovered five fumbles. He even caught one interception, which is when a defensive player catches a pass meant for an offensive player.
Professional Football Career
The Atlanta Falcons picked Jonathan Babineaux in the second round of the 2005 NFL draft. He was the 59th player chosen overall. He signed a five-year contract with the Falcons in 2008.
In 2009, he had a great year. He made nine tackles and 2.5 sacks against the Washington Redskins. That year, he led all NFL defensive tackles with a career-high six sacks.
In 2010, he made 31 tackles. He also caught one interception and caused two fumbles. He even recovered a fumble and ran it all the way for a touchdown against the Seattle Seahawks.
Jonathan continued to play well for the Falcons. In 2012, he started all 16 games and had 3.5 sacks. He signed another contract with the Falcons in 2014. He kept playing strong, making many tackles and sacks each season.
At the end of the 2016 season, Jonathan and the Falcons made it to Super Bowl LI. This is the championship game of the NFL. They played against the New England Patriots on February 5, 2017. In the Super Bowl, he made one tackle. However, the Falcons lost the game in overtime.
After playing for 12 years, Jonathan Babineaux retired from the NFL. He had a long and successful career with the Atlanta Falcons.
Personal Life
Jonathan Babineaux has a younger brother named Jordan Babineaux. Jordan also played professional football as a safety for the Seattle Seahawks and Tennessee Titans. Jonathan is also from a Louisiana Creole background.
