Jonathan Callum Brownlee (born 30 April 1990) is a famous English athlete. He is a professional duathlete and triathlete. A duathlon involves running and cycling, while a triathlon adds swimming to those two sports.

Jonathan is a six-time World champion in triathlon. This includes winning the World Triathlon Series once and the World Sprint Triathlon twice. He has also won the World Triathlon Mixed Relay three times. He is also an Olympic champion in the mixed relay event.

He was the Triathlon World Champion in 2012. He also won silver medals in 2013 and 2016. Jonathan is a two-time World Sprint Triathlon Champion. He won these titles in 2010 and 2011. He was also the Under-23 Triathlon World Champion in 2010.

Jonathan has won three Olympic medals. He won a bronze medal in the individual triathlon at the London 2012 Olympic Games. He then won a silver medal in the same race at the Rio 2016 Olympic Games. Finally, he won a gold medal in the mixed relay at the 2020 Summer Olympics in Tokyo.

In 2021, Jonathan finished third in the Super League Triathlon Championship Series. He was behind his teammate Alex Yee and New Zealand's Hayden Wilde. He also finished third overall in 2022.

Jonathan's older brother, Alistair Brownlee, is also a triathlon champion. Alistair won gold medals at both the 2012 and 2016 Olympics.

As of 2021, Jonathan was considered the most decorated triathlete in Olympic history. He was the only triathlete to win three Olympic medals. His brother Alistair, with two gold medals, is seen as the most successful. Together, the Brownlee brothers were top athletes in triathlon for much of the 2010s.

Jonathan's Early Life and Training

Jonathan Brownlee went to Bradford Grammar School. After that, he studied history at the University of Leeds. He used to swim for Aireborough Swimming club. He still holds a record there from 2000 for backstroke.

He is part of the Bingley Harriers club. His coaches are Malcolm Brown and Jack Maitland. They train at the British Triathlon Federation's High Performance Centre. This centre is located at Leeds Metropolitan University.

Jonathan and his brother Alistair share a record for most wins in the Chevin Chase race. They have both won it five times. Jonathan won in 2010, 2011, 2012, 2013, and 2016.

His dad, Keith, was a runner, and his mom, Cathy, was a swimmer. His younger brother, Edward, is also sporty. Edward enjoys rugby and water polo more than triathlon.

Junior and Early Senior Career

Jonathan was the British youth champion in both triathlon and duathlon. He won these titles in 2006 and 2007. In 2008, he won bronze medals at two big junior championships. These were the ETU European Junior Triathlon Championships and the ITU World Junior Championships.

In 2009, he won a gold medal in triathlon. This was at the Australian Youth Olympic Festival. He also competed in two races in the 2009 ITU World Championship Series.

In 2010, Jonathan raced for a French club called ECS Triathlon. He took part in the important French Club Championship Series. He won a gold medal in the individual race in Dunkirk. This helped his team win a silver medal.

Olympic and Commonwealth Games Success

At the 2012 Summer Olympics in London, Jonathan won a bronze medal. This was in the individual triathlon event. His brother Alistair won the gold medal in the same race. Jonathan had a 15-second penalty during this race.

In 2014, he won a gold medal at the Commonwealth Games. This was in the mixed triathlon team relay. He raced with his brother Alistair, Vicky Holland, and Jodie Stimpson. He also won a silver medal in the individual triathlon at the same games.

At the 2020 Summer Olympics in Tokyo, Jonathan won another gold medal. This was in the first-ever triathlon mixed relay event. He was part of a team with Jessica Learmonth, Georgia Taylor-Brown, and Alex Yee. They finished in a time of 1 hour, 23 minutes, and 41 seconds.

In 2022, Jonathan was given an award called the Member of the Order of the British Empire (MBE). This was for his great contributions to the sport of triathlon.
