Joshua Anthony Charlton Henry (born September 2, 1984) is a talented Canadian-American actor and singer. He is famous for his work on both the stage and in movies and TV shows.
Joshua is well-known for playing Billy Bigelow in the Broadway show Carousel. He also starred as Haywood Patterson in The Scottsboro Boys. Both of these roles earned him nominations for a Tony Award, which is a very important award in theatre. He also got a Tony nomination for his role as Flick in Violet.
You might also know Joshua Henry from playing Aaron Burr in the first national tour of Hamilton. Before that, he played the same role in the Chicago production of Hamilton. He has also performed in many other popular shows like Waitress, Into the Woods, and Ragtime. He even played Gaston in Beauty and the Beast: A 30th Celebration!

About Joshua Henry
Early Life and Dreams
Joshua Henry was born in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada. He grew up in Miami, Florida, United States. His dad, Zadoc Henry, was a teacher. Joshua lives in Harlem, New York City now.
When he was younger, Joshua wanted to be an accountant, like his mom. But then, he got a part in his high school play, The Music Man, playing Harold Hill. He loved the experience so much that he decided to become an actor instead! He went on to study theatre at the University of Miami and graduated in 2006. In October 2012, he married his college sweetheart, Cathryn Stringer.

Starting on Stage: Theatre Roles
First Steps and Broadway Debut (2006-2010)
Joshua Henry started his acting journey in 2006. His first role was playing Judas and John the Baptist in Godspell at the Paper Mill Playhouse in New Jersey. He almost made his Broadway debut in a transfer of this show, but it was canceled.
In 2007, Joshua joined the cast of the musical In the Heights Off-Broadway. He then moved with the show to Broadway. For In the Heights, the whole cast won a Drama Desk Award. Joshua and the other performers also won an ACCA Award for being an Outstanding Broadway Chorus.
He also performed in other Off-Broadway shows like Serenade and Shafrika, The White Girl. In 2009, he played the Tin Man in The Wiz at New York City Center. From 2010 to 2011, he was in the Broadway musical American Idiot.
Big Roles and Tony Nominations (2010-2016)
Joshua then joined the Broadway cast of The Scottsboro Boys. He played Haywood Patterson, a role that earned him great reviews. Critics said he brought a lot of power to the character. He was nominated for a Tony Award for Best Actor in a Musical in 2011.
He also played Jake in Porgy and Bess, which started in Massachusetts and then moved to Broadway. In 2013, he played Haywood Patterson again in The Scottsboro Boys in California.
In 2014, Joshua played Flick in Violet and received another Tony Award nomination. He also performed in a special concert of Parade at the Lincoln Center. In 2016, he was in the Broadway show Shuffle Along. He also performed in a benefit concert for gun violence awareness called The Last Five Years.
Starring in Hamilton and More (2016-Present)
Joshua Henry was part of the very first workshop for Lin-Manuel Miranda’s Hamilton in 2013. He played Hercules Mulligan, James Madison, and King George III. Later, in 2016 and 2017, he starred as Aaron Burr in the Chicago production of Hamilton. He then took the role on the first national tour across the United States. In 2020, he even played Burr in a special performance for the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade.
In 2018, Joshua starred as Billy Bigelow in the Broadway revival of Carousel. He earned another Tony Award nomination for this role. In 2021, he made history as the first African-American actor to play Dr. Pomatter in Waitress on Broadway.
In 2022, Joshua played Rapunzel’s Prince in the Broadway revival of Into the Woods. He left the show for a short time to film Beauty and the Beast: A 30th Celebration, but then returned to Into the Woods until it closed in 2023. In 2023, he also helped write and starred in a show called The Conversation. In 2024, he starred as Coalhouse Walker Jr. in Ragtime at New York City Center, receiving excellent reviews.
From Stage to Screen: Film and TV
Joshua Henry has also appeared in movies and on television. In 2008, he was in the first Sex and the City movie. He has also been on TV shows like Kings, Nip/Tuck, and Army Wives. On Army Wives, he played Corporal Quincy Montclair.
In 2021, Joshua was in the movie tick, tick... BOOM!, which was based on a musical. He played Roger Bart in the film. He was nominated for a Black Reel Award for his performance. In December 2022, he starred as Gaston in Beauty and the Beast: A 30th Celebration, a special TV film.
Making Music
Besides acting, Joshua Henry is also a talented singer and songwriter. In 2008, he performed in a concert called Party Worth Crashing. He was also featured on an album called "Dare to Go Beyond: The Album" in 2010.
In 2011, he performed in several concerts, including You Made This Tour and a special event honoring Burton Lane. Joshua released his own music too! He released an EP (a shorter album) called Guarantee in February 2021. Later that year, in September 2021, he released his first full album, Grow. In December 2022, he released a single called Can't Nobody Tell Us Nothin'. In October 2024, he sang on the musical concept album Warriors.
