Joshua Anthony Charlton Henry (born September 2, 1984) is a talented actor and singer. He is from both Canada and the United States. He is famous for his amazing performances in Broadway musicals and on screen.
Joshua Henry is well-known for playing Billy Bigelow in the Broadway show Carousel. He also starred as Haywood Patterson in The Scottsboro Boys. Both roles earned him nominations for the Tony Award, a very important award in theater. He also got a Tony nomination for his role as Flick in Violet. In October 2024, he played Coalhouse Walker Jr. in a show called Ragtime at New York City Center. He is set to play this role again on Broadway in September 2025.
Henry also played Aaron Burr in the first national tour of Hamilton. Before that, he was in the Chicago production of Hamilton in 2016. Other famous roles include Dr. Jim Pomatter in Waitress. He was also Rapunzel’s Prince in Into the Woods. He played Gaston in Beauty and the Beast: A 30th Celebration. He also appeared in Porgy and Bess and Shuffle Along.

Early Life and Education
Joshua Henry was born in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada. He grew up in Miami, Florida. His father was a teacher. Joshua first wanted to be an accountant, like his mother. But then he acted in his high school play, The Music Man. This experience made him change his mind about his career.
Henry studied theater at the University of Miami. He finished his studies there in 2006.
Joshua Henry's Career in Theater
Early Roles and Broadway Debut (2006-2010)
Joshua Henry started his acting career in 2006. He played Judas/John the Baptist in Godspell in New Jersey. He was supposed to go to Broadway with this show, but it was canceled.
In 2007, Henry joined the cast of In the Heights Off-Broadway. He then moved with the show to Broadway. The whole cast of In the Heights won a Drama Desk Award. Henry and the cast also won an ACCA Award for their great work.
He also performed in Serenade Off-Broadway in 2007. In 2009, he helped create music for Shafrika, The White Girl. Also in 2009, he played The Tin Man in The Wiz at New York City Center.
From 2010 to 2011, he was in the Broadway musical American Idiot. He played the role of "Favorite Son."
The Scottsboro Boys and First Tony Nomination (2010-2011)
Henry joined the Broadway cast of The Scottsboro Boys. He played Haywood Patterson. Critics really praised his performance. One newspaper said he "ignites the role." Another said he gave a "performance of keen intensity."
Even with great reviews, The Scottsboro Boys closed quickly. For his role, Henry was nominated for a Tony Award in 2011. This was for Best Actor in a Musical.
Henry also performed songs from The Scottsboro Boys in concerts. He performed at a gala honoring the show's director, Susan Stroman. He also sang at a special "Miscast Gala" in New York.
Violet and Other Leading Roles (2011-2016)
Henry played Jake in Porgy and Bess. This show started in Massachusetts in 2011. It then moved to Broadway, where it ran until September 2012.
In 2013, he played Haywood Patterson again in The Scottsboro Boys in Los Angeles.
Henry played Flick in Violet starting in April 2014. He was nominated for another Tony Award for this role.
He also performed in a concert version of Parade at the Lincoln Center. He played Jim Conley in this show.
In 2016, Henry played Noble Sissle in Shuffle Along on Broadway. He also starred in a concert of The Last Five Years in 2016. This concert helped raise money for a group working to prevent gun violence.
Carousel, Hamilton, and More Broadway Shows (2016-Present)
Joshua Henry helped create the roles of Hercules Mulligan and James Madison for a workshop of Hamilton in 2013. From 2016 to 2017, he starred as Aaron Burr in the Chicago production of Hamilton: An American Musical. He then played Burr in the first national tour across the United States. In 2020, he played Burr again for a special performance at the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade.
In 2018, Henry starred as Billy Bigelow in Carousel on Broadway. He received another Tony Award nomination for this role. The show ran for 181 performances.
In 2021, Henry became the first African-American actor to play Dr. Pomatter in Waitress. He joined the Broadway cast in November. He received an Audience Choice Award for his performance.
In May 2022, it was announced Henry would play Rapunzel’s Prince in Into the Woods. He left the show briefly to film Beauty and the Beast: A 30th Celebration. He returned to Into the Woods and stayed until it closed in January 2023.
In 2023, Henry helped write and star in a show called The Conversation. In October 2024, he starred as Coalhouse Walker Jr. in Ragtime at New York City Center. He received great reviews for this role. He is set to play Coalhouse Walker Jr. again on Broadway in September 2025.
Joshua Henry's Film and Television Roles
Henry appeared in the first ... and the City film in 2008. He also appeared on TV shows like Kings and Nip/Tuck. In 2013, he played Corporal Quincy Montclair on the show Army Wives.
Henry also starred in the movie tick, tick... BOOM! in 2021. He played Roger Bart in this film. He was nominated for a Black Reel Award for his acting.
In December 2022, Henry played Gaston in Beauty and the Beast: A 30th Celebration. This was a special TV film.
Music Career
Joshua Henry has also released his own music. On February 12, 2021, he released his EP called Guarantee. An EP is like a mini-album.
On September 10, 2021, he released his first full album, Grow. On December 13, 2022, he released a single song called Can't Nobody Tell Us Nothin'.
In October 2024, he sang on a musical album called Warriors.
Personal Life
In October 2012, Joshua Henry married his college sweetheart, Cathryn Stringer. They live in Harlem, New York City.
