Jozias Johannes van Aartsen was born on December 25, 1947. He is a retired Dutch politician. He was the leader of the People's Party for Freedom and Democracy from 2004 to 2006.

Jozias Johannes van Aartsen was born in The Hague on December 25, 1947. His father, Jan van Aartsen, was also a politician. His father served as a minister and a Queen's Commissioner.
Jozias went to high school from 1960 to 1968. After that, he studied law at the Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam. He earned a Bachelor of Laws degree in 1970. When he was 22, Van Aartsen moved to The Hague. He began his career working in politics there.
A Career in Politics

Jozias van Aartsen started working for the People's Party for Freedom and Democracy in 1971. He worked for the party leader, Hans Wiegel, in the House of Representatives. This is like a parliament where laws are made.
From 1974 to 1979, he was the director-general of the Telders Foundation. This was a research group for his political party. He also worked as a political advisor.
Working for the Government
Van Aartsen became a civil servant in 1979. He worked for the Ministry of the Interior. He held several important roles there. He was a Deputy Director-General and then a Director-General. From 1985 to 1994, he was the Secretary-General of the Ministry of the Interior. This is a very high position in the government.
Ministerial Roles
After the 1994 election, Van Aartsen became a minister. He was the Minister of Agriculture, Nature and Fisheries from 1994 to 1998. He worked under Prime Minister Wim Kok.
In 1998, after another election, he became the Minister of Foreign Affairs. He held this role until 2002. As Minister of Foreign Affairs, he represented the Netherlands to other countries.

In 2003, Van Aartsen became the leader of his party in the House of Representatives. He then became the overall leader of the People's Party for Freedom and Democracy in 2004. He stepped down from this role in 2006.
From 2008 to 2017, Jozias van Aartsen served as the Mayor of The Hague. This is a very important job, leading one of the biggest cities in the Netherlands.
After being Mayor of The Hague, he took on two temporary roles. He was the King's Commissioner for the province of Drenthe. He also served as the acting Mayor of Amsterdam. This means he was in charge for a short time.
