Juan Silveira dos Santos, known simply as Juan, is a famous Brazilian former footballer. He was born on February 1, 1979. Juan played as a centre-back, which is a defender who helps protect the goal.
He started his football journey with a Brazilian club called Flamengo. Later, he spent ten years playing in Europe. He played for Bayer Leverkusen in Germany and Roma in Italy. After that, he returned to Brazil in 2012 to play for Internacional.
Juan also played for the Brazilian national team. He played in 79 games and scored seven goals for his country. He took part in two FIFA World Cups, three FIFA Confederations Cups, and three Copa América tournaments. He won the Confederations Cup twice and the Copa América twice. Today, he works as an assistant for the Brazilian national football team.

Juan's Club Football Journey
Starting His Career in Brazil
Juan was born in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. He played for Flamengo for six years. This was where he began his professional football career.
In 2002, he moved to Europe. His first European club was Bayer Leverkusen in Germany. He played there for five years. During his time in Germany, he scored ten goals for Bayer.
Playing for AS Roma in Italy
In 2007, Juan moved to Roma, a big club in Italy. He played for Roma from 2007 to 2012. He scored 11 goals in over 140 matches for the club.
With Roma, he won the Coppa Italia and the Supercoppa Italiana. He was a key defender for the team. Juan wore the number four jersey. He scored his first goal for Roma in September 2007.
In the 2011–12 season, he often played alongside another defender, Gabriel Heinze. He scored important goals for Roma that season. One goal helped Roma win 5–1 against Cesena. He scored a total of nine goals during his time at Roma.
Back to Brazil with Internacional
On July 16, 2012, Juan left Roma. He then signed a two-year contract with Internacional in Brazil. He played for Internacional for several years.
Returning to Flamengo and Retirement
On November 11, 2015, Juan left Internacional. A month later, on December 8, 2015, he announced his return to his first club, Flamengo.
Juan played his last professional match on April 27, 2019. This was after Flamengo won the 2019 Campeonato Carioca title. His farewell game was a 3–1 win against Cruzeiro.
Juan's International Career with Brazil
Juan was a very important player for the Brazilian national team. He helped Brazil win the Copa América twice. These wins were in 2004 and 2007.
He also helped Brazil win the FIFA Confederations Cup twice. These victories were in 2005 and 2009. In the 2004 Copa América Final, he scored a winning goal in a penalty shootout against Argentina.
In the 2007 Copa América, he scored the first goal in a big 6–1 win against Chile. On June 28, 2010, Juan scored the first goal for Brazil against Chile in the 2010 FIFA World Cup. Brazil won that game 3–0 and moved to the quarter-finals.
