Julie Bishop (born Jacqueline Brown; August 30, 1914 – August 30, 2001) was a famous American actress. She was also known as Jacqueline Wells earlier in her career. Julie Bishop acted in over 80 movies and TV shows from 1923 to 1957.

Her Early Life

Julie Bishop was born Jacqueline Brown in Denver, Colorado, on August 30, 1914. For a while, she used the name Jacqueline Wells for her acting work. She also appeared as Diane Duval on stage and in one movie.

Julie started acting when she was a child in 1923. Her first movies were either Children of Jazz or Maytime.

Her Acting Career

By 1932, Julie Bishop was already an experienced film actress. She started her "talkie" (movies with sound) career with the Hal Roach studio. There, she appeared in short comedy films with famous actors like Laurel and Hardy and Charley Chase.

After that, she began working for different studios. She took supporting roles in big movies and leading roles in smaller ones. Her role in the 1936 Laurel and Hardy movie The Bohemian Girl helped her get a contract with Columbia Pictures. At Columbia, she starred in many action movies. She left Columbia in 1939 and continued to work as a freelance actress.

In 1941, Warner Bros. studio offered her a contract. But they asked her to change her name because "Jacqueline Wells" sounded like a name from older, lower-budget movies. She chose the name Julie Bishop because it matched the letters on her luggage. Her luggage had the initials "JB" from her married name, Jacqueline Brooks.

Julie Bishop made 16 movies at Warner Bros. She had supporting roles in Action in the North Atlantic (1943) with Humphrey Bogart. She also appeared in Princess O'Rourke (1943), which starred Olivia de Havilland. While filming Princess O'Rourke, she met her second husband, Clarence A. Shoop, who was a pilot.

She was the main actress opposite Errol Flynn in Northern Pursuit (1943). She played Ira Gershwin's wife in the movie Rhapsody in Blue (1945), which was a film about a real person's life. She finished her time at Warner Bros. with the movie Cinderella Jones in 1946.

In 1949, Bishop played a struggling wife and mother in Sands of Iwo Jima, starring John Wayne. She also joined John Wayne and other actresses in the 1954 aviation movie, The High and the Mighty.

Later, she worked in television, especially with Robert Cummings in his comedy shows. Julie Bishop stopped acting in 1957.

Personal Life

Julie Bishop married Walter Booth Brooks III in 1936, but they divorced in 1939. In 1944, she married General Clarence A. Shoop. They had two children: a son named Steve, who became a doctor and pilot, and a daughter named Pamela Susan Shoop, who also became an actress. Julie and Clarence were married until he passed away in 1968.

Later in 1968, she married William F. Bergin M.D. They stayed together until her death in 2001.

Julie Bishop was a member of the Republican Party. She supported Dwight D. Eisenhower in the 1952 presidential election. She was also a member of the Episcopalian church.

Death

Julie Bishop passed away from pneumonia on her 87th birthday, August 30, 2001. She died in Mendocino, California. She is buried at Forest Lawn Memorial Park in Glendale, California. Her grave is in the same plot as her second husband, Clarence A. Shoop.
