Kane is a small town, also called a borough, in McKean County, Pennsylvania. It is about 94 miles (151 km) east of Erie.
The town was started in 1864 by Civil War General Thomas L. Kane. He was part of the famous Bucktail Regiment. Kane is located high up, about 2,210 feet (674 m) above sea level.
In the early 1900s, Kane was known for making glass, bottles, and lumber. They also made things like brush handles, saws, and screen doors. The number of people living in Kane was highest in the 1920s. Today, about 3,612 people live there.
Kane is home to the Kane Area School District. Their sports teams are known as the Kane Wolves.
Some famous people have lived in Kane. These include Chuck Daly, a basketball coach who won two NBA championships. He also coached the 1992 Olympic gold medal team. Amy Rudolph is an Olympic runner who competed in the 1996 and 2000 Summer Games. Composer Maryanne Amacher also lived here. Another famous resident was Evan O'Neill Kane, a surgeon. He was known for doing surgery on himself, like removing his own appendix!

Climate in Kane
Kane has a humid continental climate. This means it has long, snowy winters and warm, humid summers. The coldest temperature ever recorded in Kane was -35°F (-37°C). The hottest was 98°F (37°C).
Late fall and early winter get a lot of snow. This is because of "lake effect snow" from Lake Erie and Lake Ontario. This type of snow happens when cold air moves over warmer lake water. Kane is the coldest city in Pennsylvania based on its average yearly temperature.

Kane is a rural town. It has many outdoor activities because it is close to the Allegheny National Forest.
- Outdoor Adventures
- Hunting and fishing are very popular.
- People enjoy visiting places like the Kinzua Dam.
- The collapsed Kinzua Bridge is now the Kinzua Skywalk. It was a railroad bridge destroyed by a tornado in 2003. Now, you can walk out on a platform and see the valley below.
- In winter, people enjoy cross-country skiing, sled riding, winter hiking, and snowmobiling.
- Parks and Play
- Evergreen Park has the Evergreen Enchanted Playland Creative Playground for kids.
- This park also has a nine-hole disc golf course. They hold yearly tournaments in the summer.
- People can go swimming at the high school's public pool. It offers swimming lessons and open swim times.
- Glenwood Park is great for family picnics. It has baseball fields and a skatepark for bicycles.
- Events and Entertainment
- Every summer, Kane has an outdoor drive-in theater that shows new movies.
- "Art in the Wilds" is an outdoor art show. It happens every year in Evergreen Park in late June.
- "Kane Fest" is an annual festival in July. It used to be called the Black Cherry Festival.

Kane has a local newspaper and several radio stations.

- The Kane Republican is one of two daily newspapers in McKean County. It shares local and national news.
- Radio Stations
- WXZY-LP (FM 101.7) started in 2014. It's a non-profit station that plays different types of music. It also covers local events, news, and sports.
- WPSX (FM 90.1) is a station that repeats programs from WPSU-FM. This is a Penn State University station that is part of NPR.
- WBYB (FM 103.9) used to be in Kane. It played country music for many years. Now, its main location is in Eldred.
- WQLE (AM 960) was the first local radio station in McKean County. It started in 1954. It stopped broadcasting in 1992.
- WCGN (FM 88.3) is a radio translator for the "Family Life Network" in Kane.
You can also hear radio stations from nearby Warren and Saint Marys in the Kane area. There are no local TV stations in Kane. People watch TV through cable and satellite services.
History of Kane
Kane was founded by Brigadier General Thomas L. Kane and his wife, Elizabeth Denniston Wood Kane, who was a doctor.
- General Thomas L. Kane
- He was the second son of Judge John Kintzing Kane from Philadelphia.
- In 1846, Colonel Kane helped the Mormons when they traveled west from Nauvoo, Illinois. He helped them find a place to stay for the winter near Council Bluffs, Iowa.
- In 1858, Colonel Kane helped prevent the "Utah War" between the U.S. Army and the Mormons.
- He was offered the job of Utah Territorial Governor. But he insisted that his friend, Brigham Young, get the job instead.
- General Kane was never a Mormon, but he was a close advisor to Brigham Young.
- The Kane Family
- General Kane's older brother was Elisha Kent Kane, a famous Arctic explorer.
- General Kane's wife and three of their four children became doctors in Kane.
- Their oldest son, Evan O'Neill Kane, M.D., was known for doing surgery on himself. He showed how well local anesthesia worked by fixing his own hernia and removing his own appendix.
- Historic Places
- Several buildings in Kane are listed on the National Register of Historic Places. These include the Kane mansion, Anoatok, the Kane Armory, the Thomas L. Kane Memorial Chapel, and the New Thomson House.
- Summer Visitors
- In the 1950s and 1960s, many people visited Kane in the summer. They came to avoid hay fever and allergies. The high elevation helped them breathe easier before air conditioning was common.
Kane Tornado of 1985
On May 31, 1985, a powerful tornado hit Kane and nearby East Kane. The F4 tornado caused a lot of damage to many homes around 8:15 PM. Sadly, three people died because of this tornado. It was the worst natural disaster in Kane's history.
Industry in Kane
The Holgate Toy Company was based in Kane for many years. They made famous wooden toys. One of their most well-known toys was a wooden replica of the Mister Rogers Trolley car. This trolley was seen in every episode of Mister Rogers' Neighborhood. The company later moved to Bradford.
Kane Area School District
The Kane Area School District has two schools. About 1,220 students attended these schools in the 2013–14 school year.
- Kane Area High School
- The high school opened in 1972.
- It is located just outside Kane in Wetmore Township.
- The school sits on the land where General Thomas Kane's home used to be. His home burned down in 1896.
- The high school auditorium stage is roughly where General Kane's front porch would have been. From there, he would have looked out over the valley where the football field is now.
- The high school teaches students from ninth to twelfth grade.
- Kane Area Elementary-Middle School
- This school is on West Hemlock Avenue and opened in 2010.
- The old middle school was updated in a big project. A new elementary wing was added to it.
- This school teaches students from kindergarten through eighth grade.
The school district decided to close two other elementary schools: Mount Jewett Elementary and Chestnut St. Elementary. Mount Jewett closed in 2007, and Chestnut St. closed in 2010. The Mount Jewett school was sold. The Chestnut St. Complex is now used for offices by companies like Kane Innovations and the school district itself.
