Kāneʻohe is a town located on the island of Oʻahu in Hawaiʻi. It's part of the City and County of Honolulu. The name Kāneʻohe comes from the Hawaiian language. It means "bamboo man."
An old Hawaiian story explains the name. A woman once compared her husband's harshness to the sharp edge of cutting bamboo. This led to the area being called Kāneʻohe.
In 2020, about 37,430 people lived here. Kāneʻohe is the biggest town along Kāneʻohe Bay. It is also one of the two largest towns on the windy, eastern side of Oʻahu. The other large town is Kailua.
The main shopping area of Kāneʻohe stretches along Kamehameha Highway. You can visit the Hoʻomaluhia Botanical Garden here. There is also the Hawaiʻi National Veterans Cemetery. You can get to Kāneʻohe Bay from a public pier and boat ramp. This is located nearby at Heʻeia Kea.
