Kapil Sharma (born Kapil Punj; 2 April 1981) is a famous Indian stand-up comedian, television host, and actor. He is well-known for hosting popular comedy and talk shows like The Great Indian Kapil Show and The Kapil Sharma Show. Kapil has won many awards for his work in television.
He first became famous after winning a comedy reality show called The Great Indian Laughter Challenge in 2007. Since then, he has hosted and produced several successful TV comedy shows. He has also acted in movies and even tried his hand at singing.

Kapil Sharma's Life
His Early Life and Family
Kapil Sharma was born in Amritsar, Punjab, India. His birth name is Kapil Punj. His father, Jeetendra Kumar Punj, worked as a head constable in the Punjab Police. His mother, Janak Rani, is a homemaker.
Kapil studied at Shri Ram Ashram Senior Secondary School and Hindu College in Amritsar. He also attended Apeejay College of Fine Arts in Jalandhar. He has a brother, Ashok Kumar Sharma, who is a police constable, and a sister, Pooja Pawan Devgan.
Kapil married Ginni Chatrath on 12 December 2018. They have two children, a daughter born in December 2019 and a son born in February 2021.
How He Became Famous
Kapil Sharma became very popular after winning the third season of The Great Indian Laughter Challenge in 2007. He won a cash prize of 10 lakh rupees. Before this, he had worked on a Punjabi show called Hasde Hasaande Ravo. Kapil has shared that he originally moved to Mumbai to become a singer.
He also took part in Sony's Comedy Circus and won six seasons of the show. He hosted the dance reality show Jhalak Dikhhla Jaa Season 6 and another comedy show called Chhote Miyan. In 2011, he was a contestant on the singing reality show Star Ya Rockstar, where he finished as the second runner-up.
From TV to Movies
In 2013, Kapil started his own show, Comedy Nights with Kapil, on Colors TV. His company, K9 Productions, produced the show. In this show, he played the character of Bittu Sharma, who hosted a fictional family show.
Kapil was honored with the Indian of the Year award in the entertainment category in 2013. He also performed live stage shows in Oman. In 2014, he was chosen as a Brand Ambassador by the Delhi Election Commission.
He co-hosted the 60th Filmfare Awards in 2015 with Karan Johar. He also presented the fourth season of Celebrity Cricket League in 2014. Kapil appeared as a guest on popular shows like Kaun Banega Crorepati, The Anupam Kher Show, and Koffee with Karan.
Kapil made his first movie appearance in Kis Kisko Pyaar Karoon (2015). It was a romantic-comedy film. His second movie, Firangi, was released in 2017. He also produced this film. In 2019, he did the Hindi voice dubbing for The Angry Birds Movie 2. His movie Zwigato was released in 2023.
His Shows Today
Comedy Nights with Kapil aired its last episode in January 2016. Kapil then started a new show called The Kapil Sharma Show on Sony Entertainment Television. This show became very popular.
In 2018, he launched Family Time With Kapil Sharma, but it had only a few episodes. He also produced a Punjabi movie called Son of Manjeet Singh. The Kapil Sharma Show returned with a new season in December 2018, produced by Salman Khan.
In 2020, it was announced that Kapil would star in a kids' comedy show called The Honey Bunny Show With Kapil Sharma on Sony Yay. In 2022, a movie about his life, titled Funkaar, was announced.
The Kapil Sharma Show continued airing on Sony until 2023. In November 2023, Netflix announced a new show with Kapil Sharma called The Great Indian Kapil Show. This show started streaming on Netflix in March 2024, featuring many of his previous co-stars.
His Music and Other Work
Kapil Sharma also has a singing career. He sang his first song, "Alone," with Guru Randhawa. The music video for the song was released on YouTube in February 2023. Kapil also performs live stand-up comedy shows.
Helping Others
Kapil Sharma is known for supporting animal rights. He and the cast of Comedy Nights with Kapil joined a PETA campaign. This campaign encouraged people to adopt homeless cats and dogs. In 2014, he adopted a retired police dog from Mumbai. He has also worked to help save elephants across India.
In 2014, the Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi nominated Kapil Sharma for the Swachh Bharat Abhiyan (Clean India Mission). This mission aims to spread awareness about cleanliness and hygiene. In September 2015, President Pranab Mukherjee invited Kapil to the Rashtrapati Bhavan to thank him for his contributions to the mission through his show.
