Kapil Sharma (born Kapil Punj on 2 April 1981) is a famous Indian stand-up comedian, TV host, and actor. He is well-known for hosting popular comedy and talk shows like The Great Indian Kapil Show and The Kapil Sharma Show. Kapil has won many awards for his work in television.
Kapil first became famous after winning a comedy reality show called The Great Indian Laughter Challenge in 2007. He has also hosted and produced other funny TV shows, including Comedy Nights with Kapil and Family Time with Kapil. He won several seasons of the comedy show Comedy Circus and even participated in a singing show called Star Ya Rockstar.
Kapil Sharma also acts in movies. His first film was Kis Kisko Pyaar Karoon in 2015, which was a success. He later appeared in Firangi (2017) and Zwigato (2023). He also lent his voice for the Hindi version of The Angry Birds Movie 2 in 2019. Besides TV and movies, Kapil performs live stand-up comedy shows.

Early Life and Family
Kapil Sharma was born in Amritsar, Punjab, India. His father, Jeetendra Kumar Punj, worked as a police officer, and his mother, Janak Rani, was a homemaker. Kapil's father passed away when Kapil was young.
Kapil went to Shri Ram Ashram Senior Secondary School and Hindu College in Amritsar. He also studied at Apeejay College of Fine Arts in Jalandhar. Kapil has a brother named Ashok Kumar Sharma, who is a police officer, and a sister named Pooja Pawan Devgan.
Kapil Sharma married Ginni Chatrath on 12 December 2018. They have two children, a daughter and a son.
Comedy and TV Career
Becoming Famous (2007-2012)
Kapil became widely known after winning the third season of The Great Indian Laughter Challenge in 2007. Before that, he worked on a Punjabi show called Hasde Hasaande Ravo. Kapil has shared that he originally moved to Mumbai hoping to become a singer.
He joined the show Comedy Circus on Sony and won six seasons of it. In 2008, Kapil was a contestant on Ustaadon Ka Ustaad. In 2011, he competed in the singing reality show Star Ya Rockstar and finished as the runner-up.
Popular Shows and Movies (2013-Present)
In 2013, Kapil started his own show called Comedy Nights with Kapil on Colors TV. He played the character of Bittu Sharma, who hosted a funny family show. He also hosted the dance reality show Jhalak Dikhhla Jaa Season 6.
Kapil received the Indian of the Year award in the entertainment category in 2013. He also performed live shows in Oman that year. In 2014, he was chosen as a Brand Ambassador by the Delhi Election Commission.
Kapil co-hosted the 60th Filmfare Awards in 2015 with Karan Johar. He also presented the fourth season of Celebrity Cricket League in 2014. He appeared as a guest on popular shows like Kaun Banega Crorepati, The Anupam Kher Show, and Koffee with Karan.
Kapil made his big movie debut in Kis Kisko Pyaar Karoon, a romantic-comedy released on 25 September 2015. The movie did very well on its opening day.
His show Comedy Nights with Kapil ended on 24 January 2016. Kapil then started a new show called The Kapil Sharma Show on Sony Entertainment Television. This new show began on 23 April 2016 and was very popular with viewers.
In 2017, Kapil faced some health challenges. His second movie, Firangi, was released on 1 December 2017. Kapil produced this film himself and played the main role. However, the movie did not do well at the box office.
His next TV show, Family Time With Kapil Sharma, started on 25 March 2018 but only aired for three episodes. In 2018, he produced a Punjabi movie called Son of Manjeet Singh. The Kapil Sharma Show returned with a new season on 29 December 2018, produced by Salman Khan.
In 2020, it was announced that Kapil would star in a kids' comedy show called The Honey Bunny Show With Kapil Sharma on Sony Yay. In January 2020, Kapil and other cast members of his Sony TV show performed live in Dubai.
In January 2022, news came out that a movie about Kapil's life, titled Funkaar, was being planned. The Kapil Sharma Show started airing on Sony again on 10 September 2022. In 2023, Kapil was the main actor in the movie Zwigato, directed by Nandita Das.
On 14 November 2023, Netflix announced The Great Indian Kapil Show would be on their platform. This new show started streaming on Netflix on 30 March 2024, featuring many familiar faces from his previous shows.
Singing Career
Kapil Sharma sang his first song called "Alone" with Guru Randhawa. The music video for the song was released on YouTube on 9 February 2023.
Community Involvement
Kapil Sharma is known for supporting animal rights. He and the cast of Comedy Nights with Kapil joined a PETA campaign to encourage people to adopt homeless cats and dogs. In July 2014, he adopted a retired police dog from Mumbai. He has also spoken out to help elephants across the country.
In 2014, the Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi nominated Kapil for the Swachh Bharat Abhiyan (Clean India Mission). This mission aimed to teach people about cleanliness and hygiene. For his help with this mission through his show, Kapil was invited to the Rashtrapati Bhavan by President Pranab Mukherjee in September 2015.
