Kappa (written as Κ for uppercase and κ for lowercase) is a letter from the Greek alphabet. It is used to make the "k" sound. You can hear this sound in both Ancient Greek and Modern Greek.
In the system of Greek numerals, Kappa has a value of 20. Other letters that came from Kappa include the Roman letter K and the Cyrillic letter К.
What is Kappa?
The letter κ always stands for the "k" sound in Greek words. When Greek words are written in English (this is called transliteration), κ is sometimes written as "c". However, this can be a bit confusing. In English, the letter "c" can sometimes sound like "s" (like in "city"). This never happens with the letter κ in Greek. It always makes the "k" sound.
Kappa in Math
In mathematics, the small letter κ (lowercase Kappa) is used for a special idea. It helps describe the curvature of a curve. Imagine a road that bends. Curvature tells you how much that road bends at any point.
The big letter Κ (uppercase Kappa) is also used in math. It can stand for a type of ordinal number that is also a cardinal number. These are special numbers used in advanced math to count very large sets.
