Karlie Elizabeth Kloss (born August 3, 1992) is a famous American model. She was a Victoria's Secret Angel from 2013 to 2015. She left this role to study at New York University. By 2019, Karlie had been on the cover of Vogue magazine 40 times around the world.

Besides modeling, Karlie is very interested in technology. She started a camp called "Kode with Klossy". This camp helps young girls learn about STEM subjects. In 2019, she became the host of the TV show Project Runway. She has worked with many top modeling agencies.

Early Life and Education

Karlie Kloss was born in Chicago, Illinois, on August 3, 1992. Her mom, Tracy, was a director, and her dad, Kurt, was a doctor. Her family has roots from Germany, Denmark, and Poland. She has three sisters: Kristine, and twins Kimberly and Kariann.

Her family moved to St. Louis in 1994. In 2013, they moved to Goshen, New York, to help with her modeling career. Karlie says her ballet training helped her learn how to move well. This was very useful for her runway walk.

In 2011, Karlie finished high school at Webster Groves High School in Webster Groves, Missouri. She was a cheerleader there. In September 2015, Karlie started studying at New York University.

Modeling Career

How Karlie Kloss Started Modeling (2006–2010)

Karlie was found by a modeling scout at a fashion show in 2005. In 2006, when she was 14, she appeared on the cover of Scene Magazine. She then signed with Elite Model Management in New York.

Her first big modeling job was for Teen Vogue. She also did a photoshoot for Abercrombie Kids. In 2008, she joined Next Management. During New York Fashion Week, she walked in 31 shows. She walked for famous brands like Calvin Klein and Marc Jacobs. That season, she walked in 64 shows in total across New York, Milan, and Paris.

In 2009, Vogue Paris magazine called her one of the "top 30 models of the 2000s." Karlie has been in many fashion magazines. These include W, Elle, Allure, and many international editions of Vogue. She was on 12 international Vogue covers in five years.

Karlie also appeared as herself in an episode of the TV show Gossip Girl. She became a favorite model for designer John Galliano. She walked in his shows for Dior and John Galliano.

Becoming a Top Model (2011–2014)

In 2011, Karlie continued working with Christian Dior. Life magazine featured her on the cover of a special issue. This issue showed her at fashion shows in Paris and New York. That fall, she walked in the Victoria's Secret Fashion Show for the first time.

In 2012, Karlie was on the covers of British Vogue and Japanese Vogue. She also appeared in ads for brands like Juicy Couture. She co-hosted the MTV show House of Style. Before the Victoria's Secret Fashion Show in 2012, Karlie cut her long hair into a bob. This haircut became known as the "Karlie."

In 2013, Karlie was the face of campaigns for Donna Karan and Lacoste. She also worked with Victoria's Secret on their swimwear video. She hosted the red carpet pre-show for the 2013 MTV Movie Awards. Karlie also became an ambassador for Coach, Inc..

In 2014, Karlie was the face of campaigns for Nike and Chanel Coco Noir perfume. She also worked with Frame Denim to create her own jeans collection. She designed an eyewear line with Warby Parker. In 2015, Karlie decided to leave Victoria's Secret. She said she had concerns about their message to young women.

That year, Karlie was on the cover of American Vogue with singer Taylor Swift. She also played "Knockout" in Taylor Swift's music video for "Bad Blood". Karlie appeared on stage with Taylor Swift during her 1989 World Tour. In July 2015, Karlie started her own YouTube channel called Klossy. She posts weekly videos and answers questions there.

In May 2016, Karlie became the new face of Swarovski jewelry. In April 2017, she was a reporter on the Netflix show Bill Nye Saves the World. Karlie also won the Diane von Furstenberg Inspiration Award in 2017.

In April 2018, Karlie became a global spokesperson for Estée Lauder beauty products. In October 2018, Karlie announced she would host and produce the TV show Project Runway. She said she was excited to help new designers.

Karlie is considered one of the "New Supers" in modeling. Her runway walk is known for being powerful and precise. She describes it as a "moody gait."

Other Ventures

Karlie has done many other things besides modeling. She worked with the restaurant Momofuku Milk Bar to create 'Karlie's Kookies'. These special cookies were sold to raise money for FEED Projects. This charity helps provide meals to people in need.

In 2020, Karlie was part of a group that bought the fashion magazine W. In 2023, she bought the British fashion magazine i-D and became its CEO. She also invests in a company called Seed, which makes probiotics. In 2024, she and her husband brought back Life magazine for print and digital.

Computer Programming

Karlie Kloss is also a computer programmer. She learned about Ruby on Rails and other web development skills in 2014. She later narrated an episode about "Coding" on the Netflix show Explained.

In April 2015, Karlie started Kode with Klossy. This program teaches girls about computer science. She partnered with Flatiron School and Code.org to offer scholarships. She also launched a free two-week summer coding camp for girls aged 13–18. The camp teaches basic programming languages like Ruby and JavaScript. By 2018, Kode with Klossy had 50 camps in 25 US cities. Over 1,000 girls learned to build mobile apps or websites at the camp.

Personal Life

Karlie Kloss started dating businessman Joshua Kushner in 2012. They got engaged in July 2018. Karlie married Joshua on October 18, 2018, in New York. They had a second wedding party in Wyoming in June 2019. They have two sons, born in March 2021 and July 2023.

Karlie has supported Hillary Clinton and Joe Biden in past US elections. She and her husband attended the March for Our Lives event in 2018. This event protested gun violence. Karlie is a feminist. She has said her feminist beliefs were part of why she left Victoria's Secret.
