Dr. Kathleen Joan Reichs, born on July 7, 1948, is an American writer and a scientist who studies bones. This type of scientist is called a forensic anthropologist. She used to be a professor of anthropology at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte. She is very famous for inspiring the TV show called Bones.

About Kathy Reichs

Kathy Reichs is a well-known expert in forensic anthropology. This means she helps solve crimes by studying human bones. She has used her real-life experiences to write many popular books. She also helped create the TV series Bones.

Her Early Life and School

Kathleen Joan Toelle was born in 1948 in Chicago, Illinois. She went to American University and earned her first degree in anthropology in 1971. She then continued her studies at Northwestern University. There, she earned her master's degree in 1972 and her PhD in 1975. Both of these advanced degrees were in physical anthropology.

Her Work as a Scientist

Since 1975, Dr. Reichs has taught at several universities. These include Northern Illinois University and McGill University. She is now a professor emerita at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte. This means she is a retired professor who still holds an honored title.

Dr. Reichs has also worked as a consultant for the Chief Medical Examiner in North Carolina. She has helped with important cases around the world. For example, she testified at the United Nations's International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda. She also helped with an exhumation (digging up a body) in Guatemala. She was even part of a team that helped identify victims after the World Trade Center disaster.

She is one of only 100 anthropologists certified by the American Board of Forensic Anthropology. This shows how skilled and respected she is in her field.

Kathy Reichs' Books

Dr. Reichs has written many books, including 23 novels as of January 2019. Her books have been translated into 30 different languages. Most of her novels are part of the "Temperance Brennan" series. Her first novel, Déjà Dead, won an award for Best First Novel in 1997.

The Temperance Brennan Series

The main character in her novels is Temperance "Tempe" Brennan. Tempe is also a forensic anthropologist, just like Dr. Reichs. Dr. Reichs has said that she and Tempe have similar career backgrounds. She also mentioned that some of Tempe's personality traits are like her own.

Many parts of the novels are based on real science. Dr. Reichs makes sure the science in her books is very accurate. She uses her own experiences from her career in her stories. For example, she said that everything she described in her first book, Déjà Dead, she had actually done. She also used her experiences from her visit to Guatemala in her novel Grave Secrets.

Other Books for Young Readers

Dr. Reichs has also written a series of young adult novels called Virals. She wrote these books with her son, Brendan Reichs. This series is about Tempe Brennan's great-niece, Tory Brennan. Tory and her friends have special abilities and solve mysteries.

She also wrote a stand-alone novel called Two Nights, which was published in 2017. This book features a new character named Sunday Night.

Kathy Reichs and Television

The TV show Bones is based on Dr. Reichs' life and her novels. The show started in 2005 and was very popular. The main character in the show is also named Temperance "Bones" Brennan.

In the TV show, Temperance Brennan is a forensic anthropologist, just like in the books. However, there are some differences. The TV character is younger and sometimes struggles with social situations. She works at the Jeffersonian, which is a made-up version of the Smithsonian Institution in Washington, D.C. In the show, the TV character Brennan also writes books about a fictional forensic anthropologist named Kathy Reichs!

Dr. Reichs worked as a producer for the Bones TV show. Her job was to make sure the science in the show was correct. She even appeared in one episode, playing a professor. She also wrote three episodes of the show, including one with her daughter Kerry.

Personal Life

Dr. Reichs is married to Paul Reichs. They have three children together.
