Kendrick Peak, also known as Kendrick Mountain, is a tall mountain in Arizona. It is located north of the city of Flagstaff. The peak is part of the San Francisco volcanic field in Coconino County.
Kendrick Peak stands about 10,425 feet (3,177 meters) high. This makes it one of the tallest mountains in Arizona. The mountain is very old, formed between 1.4 and 2.7 million years ago. It is mostly made of volcanic rocks called dacite and rhyolite.
The peak is located within the Kendrick Mountain Wilderness. This area is managed by both the Kaibab National Forest and the Coconino National Forest. A fire lookout tower has been on top of Kendrick Peak since the early 1900s. Forest Service staff and volunteers watch for fires from this tower.
Hiking Trails
There are three main trails that lead to the top of Kendrick Peak. These trails are the Kendrick Mountain Trail, the Pumpkin Trail, and the Bull Basin Trail. They offer different ways for hikers to reach the summit.
Unique Trees
Along the Kendrick Mountain Trail, near the top, you can find a special tree. It is a Colorado pinyon (Pinus edulis) growing at almost 10,400 feet (3,170 meters). This is unusual because these trees usually grow at lower elevations. It grows among other trees like Engelmann spruce (Picea engelmannii) and limber pine (Pinus flexilis).
Wildfire Impact
In the year 2000, a large wildfire affected Kendrick Peak and the surrounding wilderness. Hikers can still see the effects of this fire today. Efforts are being made to help the forest recover. Sometimes, cattle are allowed to graze near the Kendrick Mountain Trail to help manage the land.
Mountain Geology
Kendrick Peak is a type of volcano called a dome volcano. These volcanoes form when thick lava slowly pushes out of the ground. Other dome volcanoes in Arizona include Mount Elden and Bill Williams Mountain.
