Khreem Smith (born July 7, 1979) is a former professional gridiron football player. He played as a defensive lineman, which is a position on the defense that tries to stop the other team's offense. Smith played for many different teams in various leagues, including the NFL, the AFL, and the CFL. He is known for winning several championships during his career.

Playing Career Highlights

Starting in College

Khreem Smith played college football at Oklahoma State University. After college, he was not chosen in the 2004 NFL draft. This means he was an undrafted free agent. However, the Baltimore Ravens invited him to their training camp in 2004.

Success in Arena Football

Smith found great success in the Arena Football League (AFL) and its smaller league, AF2.

  • In 2005, he played for the Memphis Xplorers in AF2. He helped his team win the ArenaCup V championship.
  • In 2006, he joined the Chicago Rush in the main Arena Football League. They won ArenaBowl XX, another major championship.
  • During the 2006 season, Smith was a standout player. He made 22.5 tackles and had eight sacks. Sacks happen when a defensive player tackles the opposing quarterback behind the line of scrimmage. He also forced six fumbles, which means he knocked the ball loose from an opponent.
  • His eight sacks were the third-highest in his team's history for a single season. He led the AFL in forced fumbles that year. Because of his great play, he was named to the Second-team All-Arena and the All-Rookie team.

Brief Stints in the NFL

After his success in the AFL, Smith signed with the Minnesota Vikings in 2006. He started on their practice squad and later joined the main team. In 2007, he moved to the Kansas City Chiefs, where he also played on their practice squad before joining the active roster.

Returning to Arena Football and Other Leagues

Smith returned to the Chicago Rush for the 2008 season. He also played for the Chicago Slaughter in the Continental Indoor Football League in 2009.

He then came back to the Arena Football League for more seasons:

  • In 2010, he played for the Milwaukee Iron.
  • In 2011, he was with the Spokane Shock before being traded to the Utah Blaze.

Playing in Canada

After playing for many teams in the United States, Khreem Smith joined the BC Lions in the Canadian Football League (CFL) in 2011. In his very first season in the CFL, he helped the Lions win the 99th Grey Cup, which is the CFL's championship game. He played for the BC Lions until 2015.

More Arena Football Championships

Smith continued his career in the Arena Football League:

  • In 2016, he played for the Jacksonville Sharks.
  • In 2017, he joined the Baltimore Brigade. That year, he was named the AFL Defensive Lineman of the Year and was again selected for the First-team All-Arena.
  • In 2018, he played for the Washington Valor. He was a key player on defense and helped the Valor win ArenaBowl XXXI, another major championship.
  • His last team was the Columbus Destroyers in 2019.
