Khurshed Alam Khan (born February 5, 1919 – died July 20, 2013) was an important Indian politician. He was a senior leader of the Indian National Congress political party.
He served as the Governor of Karnataka from 1991 to 1999 and the Governor of Goa from 1989 to 1991. Before that, he was a minister in the Indian government, handling important areas like foreign affairs. He also had a special connection with Jamia Millia Islamia University.
Early Life and Education
Khurshed Alam Khan was born on February 5, 1919, in Pitaura, a village in the Farrukhabad District of Uttar Pradesh, India. His family had roots in the Pashtun tribes.
He loved learning! He studied at Agra University, where he earned bachelor's and master's degrees in History. He also went to the University of Pennsylvania in the U.S.A. to study Management.
Khurshed Alam Khan was very interested in education throughout his life. He was part of the governing body for Dr. Zakir Husain Memorial College in New Delhi. He also led the Board of Governors for the YMCA Institute of Engineering. He had a deep interest in the Jamia Millia Islamia University in Delhi.
Political Career and Public Service
Khurshed Alam Khan worked hard to make Jamia Millia Islamia an independent university. Thanks to his efforts, the Indian Parliament passed a law to make this happen. He later became the Chancellor (head) of this university. He was also a member of the Council of Indian Institutes of Technology.
He served as a Member of Parliament for over 15 years. He was a member of the Rajya Sabha (one of India's two parliamentary houses) from 1974 to 1984. Later, he was a member of the Lok Sabha (the other house) from 1984 to 1989. He represented the Farrukhabad constituency.
As a minister in the Indian government, he handled many important jobs. These included External Affairs (foreign relations), Tourism, Civil Aviation (air travel), Textiles, and Commerce (trade).
When he was the minister for External Affairs, he traveled a lot around the world. He spoke at the United Nations Security Council many times. He also led conferences for foreign ministers from Non-Aligned Countries in Delhi and Luanda. In 1988, he represented India at the Republican Party Convention in the U.S.A.
He left his Lok Sabha seat when he was appointed the Governor of Goa on July 18, 1989. He also served as the Governor of Maharashtra for some time. He became the Governor of Karnataka on January 6, 1991, and also served as the Governor of Kerala.
Personal Interests and Family
Khurshed Alam Khan was very interested in education, tourism, transport, and urban development. For his free time, he enjoyed reading and gardening (horticulture).
He was married to Saeeda Khurshid. She was the elder daughter of Dr. Zakir Hussain, who was the third President of India. His son, Salman Khurshid, also became a Union Minister for External Affairs (India's Foreign Minister). Khurshed Alam Khan also had three daughters. He had many grandchildren and was also present for a large part of his great-grandchildren's lives.
