Early Life and Beginnings
Kiana Ledé Brown was born in Lemoore, California, and grew up in Phoenix, Arizona. Her father has African American and Indigenous American heritage. Her mother is a white Hispanic woman of Mexican-American background. Kiana started singing the alphabet as a baby and began performing at just three years old after getting her first karaoke machine.
As a child, Kiana often performed in school plays and beauty pageants. She also learned to play the piano. She loved singing so much that she sometimes got in trouble for singing in class! This led her mother to enroll her in a performing arts school, so she could use her talent in a good way. She went to Mountain Pointe High School.
Kiana is a strong supporter of mental health awareness. She openly talks about her experiences with a mental health condition and how she manages it. She believes it's important for everyone, especially Black people and people of color, to have access to help like therapy.
Kiana's Career Journey
Winning a Talent Competition
In 2011, Kiana's mother found Kidz Bop, a website where kids could share videos of themselves performing. She uploaded a video of Kiana singing an original song while playing the piano, and it was chosen as a finalist. Kiana then sang Adele's "Someone Like You" to make it into the Top 4. She eventually won the 2011 KIDZ Star USA Grand Prize! This was a huge national talent competition for kids under 15, with 45,000 entries.
Kiana found out she won at a school assembly, where American Idol winner Kris Allen surprised her with the news. The prize included a recording contract with RCA Records and a role in the Kidz Bop 21 music video and commercial. Kris Allen was very impressed, saying Kiana was "no doubt gonna win this thing" after seeing her perform live.
First Songs and Performances
Kiana got to choose her first single from three options. She picked "Hey Chica" because it was an upbeat song. It was released on June 19, 2012. Kiana performed "Hey Chica" on The Today Show and at the 86th annual Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade. She also sang "Do The Mermaid" from the movie Barbie in A Mermaid Tale 2.
In 2012, Kiana was featured on the cover of Miss Moxie's Holiday issue. The website praised "Hey Chica" for its message of self-empowerment, encouraging young women to feel beautiful just as they are.
Moving to Los Angeles and New Beginnings
At 16, Kiana moved to Los Angeles. She wanted more creative control over her music. When she showed her record label what she was working on, they didn't see its potential and dropped her a month later. After this, she started making cover songs with a production team called Rice N' Peas. This series of covers was called "Soulfood Sessions" and quickly gained millions of views online.
In 2016, Kiana was cast as Zoe Vaughn in the second season of MTV's Scream. In 2018, she also got a main role alongside Joseph Simmons (from Run-DMC) in the Netflix series All About The Washingtons. Even though Kiana received great reviews for her acting, the show was canceled after just one season.
Success with Republic Records
After leaving RCA Records, Kiana signed with Republic Records. Her cover of Drake's "Hotline Bling" helped get their attention. She released her first EP called Selfless in July 2018. This EP featured her breakthrough single "Ex", which became her first song to appear on the Billboard charts. It reached number 9 on the US R&B Songs charts and earned a platinum award by June 2020. To promote Selfless, she opened shows for Jessie J on her R.O.S.E. Tour. She also opened for Ella Mai's The Debut Tour in 2019.
Kiana's second EP, Myself, came out in June 2019. It included the song "Bouncin" with rapper Offset, which reached the top 30 on Billboard's rhythmic airplay chart. That same year, she also went on her first tour as the main performer.
Debut Album and Recent Work
Songs like "Title" and "Easy Breezy" helped build excitement for her first full album, which Kiana had been working on for a while. Her highly anticipated 17-track debut album, KIKI, was released on April 3, 2020. It debuted at number 30 on the Billboard 200 chart. The album features other R&B stars like Ari Lennox and 6LACK. The first single from the album, "Mad at Me", uses parts of Outkast's 2000 hit song "So Fresh, So Clean".
Kiana later appeared as a guest on songs with artists like Usher and Queen Naija. She released a deluxe version of KIKI on October 23, 2020, which included seven extra songs. In 2021, she was featured on the first all-female compilation album, Big Femme Energy Volume 1, with her song "Cut 'Em Off".
On January 7, 2023, Kiana released a collection of songs called Unfinished on SoundCloud. Her second studio album, Grudges, was released on June 16, 2023. She also announced a tour called The Grudges Tour, which took place in September and October 2023.
