Fair Elections in Kilmichael
In 2001, something important happened in Kilmichael. The people in charge of the town's government, called the board of aldermen, decided to cancel the town elections. They said they needed more time to make changes to how elections were run.
However, some people believed the elections were delayed to prevent African American politicians from being elected. The Justice Department, which helps make sure laws are followed, stepped in. They used a law called the Voting Rights Act to make sure a special election happened.
Because of this, Kilmichael held a special election. For the first time ever, the town elected its first African American mayor and three African American aldermen. This was a big step for fairness and equal representation in the town's government.
