Kim Nam-il (Korean: 김남일; born on May 1, 1977) is a famous South Korean football player and manager. He was known for playing as a defensive midfielder, a position where he helped protect his team's goal.

Early Life and First Steps in Football
Kim Nam-il started playing football when he was in third grade. His parents were not sure about his choice at first. This was because he was also very good at school. But Kim Nam-il loved football and kept playing throughout his school years.
Playing for South Korea's Youth Teams
In 1996, Kim Nam-il played for the South Korean under-20 team. He scored his first international goal against Iran in the 1996 AFC Youth Championship. Even though he wasn't chosen for the 1997 FIFA World Youth Championship, he soon joined the main South Korean senior team. This happened for the 1998 Asian Games. He made his first game appearance for the senior team during this tournament.
Kim Nam-il's Playing Career
Kim Nam-il became a key player for the national team under coach Guus Hiddink. At first, some people criticized him for not having the best basic skills. However, Coach Hiddink believed in him. Kim Nam-il became a very important defensive midfielder. His job was to stop the other team's attacks before they could reach the goal.
The "Vacuum Cleaner" on the Field
He earned the nickname "Vacuum cleaner" because he was so good at clearing the ball. He had amazing energy and never gave up. In the 2002 World Cup, he played in five games. He helped South Korea reach the quarter-finals. Sadly, he hurt his ankle during the game against Spain. South Korea then lost to Germany in the semi-finals after he left the tournament.
Becoming a Football Star
After the 2002 World Cup, Kim Nam-il became incredibly popular. He gained many female fans, which led to sold-out games. His popularity also helped his club, Jeonnam Dragons, become more well-known. Many companies wanted him to appear in their advertisements. However, he preferred to give interviews rather than appear on TV shows.
Playing in Europe and Other World Cups
In 2003, Kim Nam-il went to Europe to play for Feyenoord in the Netherlands. He was then loaned to Excelsior for five months. He did not make a big impact there. He returned to South Korea after this experience.
He also played in the 2006 FIFA World Cup. Here, he helped both the defense and the attack with his long passes. Kim Nam-il also played in the 2010 FIFA World Cup. During this tournament, some fans blamed him for giving away a penalty kick against Nigeria.
Managerial Career
After his playing days, Kim Nam-il started coaching. In 2016, he became a coach at Jiangsu Suning. He then joined the coaching staff for the South Korea at the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia. After the World Cup, he went back to his former club, Jeonnam Dragons, as a coach.
On December 23, 2019, Kim Nam-il was chosen to be the manager of Seongnam FC. He managed the team until 2022.
Personal Life
Kim Nam-il is the youngest of three brothers. He is good friends with other famous footballers, Lee Kwan-woo and Lee Dong-gook.
He married anchorwoman Kim Bo-min. They got engaged secretly in June 2007. They have a son together.
