Kim Nam-il is a famous South Korean football player and manager. He was born on March 14, 1977. He played as a defensive midfielder, a player who helps protect the team's goal. He is known for his strong play and important role in many matches.

Early Football Journey
Kim Nam-il started playing football when he was in third grade. His parents were not sure about his choice at first. This was because he was also very good at school. But Kim Nam-il loved football and kept playing throughout his school years.
In 1996, he played for the South Korean under-20 team. He scored his first international goal against Iran. Later, he joined the senior South Korean team. This was for the 1998 Asian Games.
Playing Career Highlights
Becoming a Key Player
Under coach Guus Hiddink, Kim Nam-il became a very important player for the national team. At first, some people criticized his basic skills. But Coach Hiddink believed in him. Kim Nam-il became a key defensive midfielder. He was great at stopping opponents' attacks.
He was even nicknamed the "Vacuum cleaner." This was because he would "clean up" the midfield. He showed great energy and fought hard for the ball.
2002 FIFA World Cup
In the 2002 World Cup, Kim Nam-il played in five games. He helped South Korea reach the quarter-finals. Sadly, he hurt his ankle during the match against Spain. He could not play in the rest of the tournament. South Korea later lost to Germany in the semi-finals.
Rise to Stardom
After the 2002 World Cup, Kim Nam-il became very famous. People called it "Kim Nam-il Syndrome." He gained many female fans. His team's matches sold out, and merchandise was very popular. His former club, Jeonnam Dragons, also became much more popular.
Many companies wanted him to appear in their ads. He was asked to be on many TV shows. But he preferred to give interviews instead.
Playing in Europe and Later World Cups
In 2003, Kim Nam-il went to play in the Netherlands. He joined a club called Feyenoord on loan. He then played for their partner club, Excelsior, for a few months.
He also played in the 2006 FIFA World Cup. Here, he helped both in defense and with long passes for attacks. He also played in the 2010 FIFA World Cup. In this tournament, he was involved in a penalty kick against Nigeria.
Managerial Career
After his playing days, Kim Nam-il started coaching. In 2016, he became a coach at Jiangsu Suning. He then joined the South Korea's coaching staff. This was for the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia.
After the World Cup, he coached for Jeonnam Dragons. On December 23, 2019, he became the manager of Seongnam FC.
Personal Life
Kim Nam-il is the youngest of three brothers. He is good friends with fellow footballers Lee Kwan-woo and Lee Dong-gook. He is married to anchorwoman Kim Bo-min. They have a son together.
