Kim Roberts is a Canadian actress known for her many roles in TV shows and movies. You might know her voice as Mayor Goodway from Paw Patrol. Early Life and Education
Kim Roberts' parents came from the Caribbean. Her mother is from Dominica, and her father was from Jamaica. They met and got married in Toronto, Canada, where Kim and her brother Mark were born. Kim still feels a strong connection to both islands.
As a child, Kim loved to perform. She was part of a group called The Friendship Circle, which had young singers and dancers. They sang folk songs and performed at schools and festivals. Kim also appeared on a TV show with Bram from the famous children's music group Sharon, Lois & Bram.
Kim started acting on stage at home, putting on plays for her family and friends. When she was 12, she attended a drama workshop at the University of Toronto. This experience made her even more interested in acting. She later studied at the Claude Watson School for the Arts and finished high school at C. W. Jefferys Collegiate Institute.
Acting Career Highlights
Kim Roberts first went to the University of Western Ontario to study political science. She thought about becoming a lawyer. However, a summer theater class at York University changed her path. The head of the theater department invited her to study acting there.
Before finishing her studies, Kim got a role in a play called "No Problems Here." She performed, produced, and directed for the theater company for three years. Kim then started working in film and television. She made history by becoming the first Black woman to be the main character in a Canadian TV commercial for Benylin cough syrup.
Since then, Kim Roberts has had over 200 roles in movies and TV shows. She has worked alongside many well-known actors like Christopher Plummer, Helen Mirren, Jackie Chan, Lindsay Lohan, and Julie Andrews. She has also been directed by famous people such as Steven Spielberg and Maya Angelou.
Kim Roberts is one of the thirteen people who started the Obsidian Theatre Company. This is Canada's main Black theater company. She also narrated The Book of Negroes for a CBC podcast. In 1999, Kim Roberts was one of the first actors to film a scene inside CIA Headquarters in Langley, Virginia.
Awards and Recognition
Kim Roberts has received several awards for her work. In 1996, she won the Harold Award for her theater performances.
In 2014, she received the Reelworld Trailblazer award at the Reelworld Film Festival. This award recognized her amazing career in film and television. More recently, in 2022, she was honored with the Independent Leader Award at the Vaughan International Film Festival. These awards show how much her talent and hard work are appreciated in the entertainment world.
