Kinneloa Mesa is a small community located in Los Angeles County, California, United States. It is an "unincorporated community," which means it's not an official city. Instead, it's managed directly by the county government. In 2000, about 1,070 people lived in Kinneloa Mesa.
Kinneloa Mesa is different from nearby Altadena. Altadena is a larger unincorporated area that is also a "census-designated place." This means the government officially recognizes it for collecting census data. Kinneloa Mesa is not a census-designated place.
Where is Kinneloa Mesa?
Kinneloa Mesa is part of the Fifth Supervisorial District of Los Angeles County. This means it's in a specific area that a county supervisor helps oversee.
The community is surrounded by nature and other towns. To the north, you'll find the San Gabriel Mountains and the Angeles National Forest. The city of Pasadena borders Kinneloa Mesa on its other sides. It's also close to Altadena, across the Eaton Canyon wash, and Sierra Madre.
History of Kinneloa Mesa
The streets in Kinneloa Mesa were planned and named by a person named Mr. Abbot Kinney. The name "Kinneloa" comes from the Hawaiian language, ‘Ōlelo Hawai’i. It means "Big Kinney." People thought it meant "Kinney’s Hill," similar to "Maunaloa." This idea inspired many street names in the area to have a Hawaiian style, like Mesaloa, Meyerloa, and Lindaloa.
One street, Clarmeya, was named after the first two families who lived in Kinneloa Mesa: the Clarks and the Meyers. The community is next to a hill that looks like a Hawaiian mountain range when seen from above. This natural feature also helped inspire the Hawaiian names for the streets and the community itself.
Some historians believe that Kinneloa Mesa might have been part of a large ranch owned by Abbot Kinney. The community was also sometimes called the Kinneloa Estates.
The Kinneloa Fire
In 1993, a large wildfire called the Kinneloa Fire affected the area. It started by accident on the slopes above Eaton Canyon. The fire spread quickly because of strong Santa Ana winds that blow through Southern California.
The Kinneloa Fire burned many homes in Kinneloa Mesa and the nearby community of Altadena. Sadly, one person passed away due to the fire, and many others were affected. Sometimes, news stories accidentally misspell "Kinneloa" as "Kinneola." This can make it harder to find information about the community's past and present events.
