History
How Kodak Got Its Name
Kodak got its unique name in 1892. The local postmaster, Harvey N. Underwood, was looking for an easy-to-remember name for his village and its post office. He heard about the new "Kodak" brand of camera, which was becoming very popular. Underwood decided that this name was perfect because it was easy to spell and remember.
He asked George Eastman, the person who started the Eastman Kodak company, if he could use the name. Eastman agreed, and that's how the community of Kodak got its name! In 1989, a new post office building was built on Highway 66. Since the 1990s, a large part of Kodak near State Highway 66 and I-40 exit 407 has become part of the City of Sevierville.
The Treaty of Dumplin Creek
An important historical event happened in the area that would become Kodak. The Treaty of Dumplin Creek was signed here on June 10, 1785. This treaty was an agreement between the State of Franklin (a proposed state that was never fully recognized) and the Cherokee tribe of Native Americans.
The exact spot where the treaty was signed is not known for sure. A historical marker in the area tells us about the people involved. From the State of Franklin, the signers included John Sevier, who is the namesake of Sevier County. The Cherokee signers included leaders like "the King of the Cherokee" and others from various towns. This treaty allowed white settlers to move into parts of East Tennessee without resistance from the Native Americans. These areas included what are now Blount, Hamblen, Jefferson, Knox, and Sevier counties.
Commerce
The area around Exit 407 on Interstate 40 in Kodak is a busy place. You can find many restaurants and several stores there. These include both national chains and local shops. A very large Buc-ee's travel center opened in 2023. It is known for being one of the biggest convenience stores in the world.
