He played his first game for Arsenal on 11 August 2002. It was a 1–0 win against Liverpool in the FA Community Shield. He started his Arsenal career playing in different positions, like defensive midfielder and right-back. He scored his first goal for Arsenal against Chelsea on 1 September.

For the 2003–04 season, Arsenal's manager, Arsène Wenger, started playing Touré as a central defender. He played alongside Sol Campbell. Touré learned a lot from older player Martin Keown. That season, Arsenal won the league without losing any games. They were called the "Invincibles."

In the 2004–05 season, Touré continued to play an important role. He helped Arsenal win the FA Cup that season. He played 50 games and scored one goal. His only goal that season in Europe was against Bayern Munich.
