Gnégnéri Yaya Touré (born 13 May 1983) is a famous Ivorian football player and coach. He played as a midfielder for many top clubs. Today, he is an assistant coach for the Saudi Arabia national team.

Yaya Touré wanted to be a striker when he was young. He even played as a centre-back for Barcelona in a big final. But he mostly played as a box-to-box midfielder. Many people think he is one of the best African players ever. He won the African Footballer of the Year award four times in a row! This was in 2011, 2012, 2013, and 2014.

Touré started his career in Ivory Coast at ASEC Mimosas. He was only 18 when he first played. His skills caught the eye of European clubs. He played for teams like Beveren, Metalurh Donetsk, Olympiacos, and Monaco. Then, in 2007, he joined Barcelona. He played over 100 games there. He was part of the amazing Barcelona team that won six trophies in one year, back in 2009.

In 2010, Touré moved to Manchester City in England. He scored many important goals for them. He scored the only goals in the 2011 FA Cup semi-final and final. He also helped City win their first league title in 44 years. This was a huge moment for the club.

Yaya Touré played 100 games for the Ivory Coast from 2004 to 2015. He played in three FIFA World Cup tournaments. He also played in six Africa Cup of Nations tournaments. He helped his country finish second in 2006 and 2012. In 2015, he was the captain when they won the tournament! His older brother, Kolo Touré, was also a footballer. They played together for Manchester City and the national team.

Playing Career Highlights

Early Football Steps

Yaya Touré was born in Bouaké, Ivory Coast. He joined the ASEC Mimosas youth academy in 1996. A coach named Jean-Marc Guillou helped him a lot. In 2001, Guillou invested in a Belgian club called Beveren. He wanted to help Ivorian players play in Europe. Touré moved to Beveren in 2001. Many other players from ASEC also went there. By 2003, 14 Ivorians were on the Beveren team.

In 2003, Touré had a tryout with Arsenal in England. He played in a friendly match. Arsenal wanted to sign him, but he had trouble getting a work permit. So, Touré decided to join Metalurh Donetsk in Ukraine in December 2003. He played there for about a year and a half.

Time in Greece and France

Touré joined Olympiacos in Greece in 2005. His older brother said he was like "the new Patrick Vieira". Olympiacos won two trophies that season. Touré was a very important player for them. His great performances in Greece made many clubs interested in him.
