The 2009–10 season was a super exciting time for FC Barcelona. They aimed to win six major football competitions after their amazing success the year before. These competitions included the Spanish Super Cup, UEFA Super Cup, FIFA Club World Cup, Copa del Rey, La Liga, and the UEFA Champions League.
During the summer, Barcelona made a big player trade. They sent their top goal scorer, Samuel Eto'o, to Inter Milan in Italy. In return, they got Zlatan Ibrahimović and €48 million. This brought the total value of the deal to €69 million. On May 16, Barcelona won their 20th league title. They set a new record with 99 points after beating Valladolid 4–0. This meant they finished the 2009–10 season with four major trophies!

Building the Team: New Players and Young Talent
In the summer of 2009, Barcelona brought in some new players. Besides Zlatan Ibrahimović, they signed defender Maxwell from Inter Milan. They also got forward Keirrison from Brazil and defender Dmytro Chyhrynskyi from Ukraine.
Barcelona is known for using players from its own youth academy, called cantera. Manager Pep Guardiola brought four young players from the reserves to the main team. These players were Jonathan dos Santos, Jeffrén, Andreu Fontàs, and Marc Muniesa.
Big Awards for Barcelona Stars
Messi's Golden Year: Ballon d'Or and FIFA World Player
On December 1, 2009, France Football magazine announced that Lionel Messi had won the 2009 Ballon d'Or. This made him the ninth player from Barcelona to win this important award. He was also the first Argentine player and the first from Barcelona's youth academy, La Masia, to win it. Messi thanked his family and his teammates for helping him achieve this honor. He also praised his teammates Xavi and Andrés Iniesta, who finished third and fourth in the voting.
On December 21, Messi was also named 2009 FIFA World Player of the Year. He won by a huge number of votes, getting 1,073 votes compared to Cristiano Ronaldo's 352. Xavi and Iniesta also finished in the top five. This made 2009 one of the most memorable years in Barcelona's history.
On January 16, Messi became the youngest player to score 100 official goals for Barcelona. He reached this milestone by scoring two goals in a league match against Sevilla. He said he was just trying to live normally and achieve more goals. By the end of the 2009–10 season, Messi was the top scorer in La Liga with 34 goals. He also won the European Golden Shoe, an award for the top league scorer in Europe. Víctor Valdés won the Zamora Trophy for being the best goalkeeper in La Liga.
IFFHS Awards: Recognizing Barcelona's Best
On January 13, the International Federation of Football History & Statistics (IFFHS) gave out more awards. Xavi was named the 2009 World's Best Playmaker. Lionel Messi and Andrés Iniesta also ranked high, coming in second and fourth. Finally, manager Pep Guardiola was named the 2009 World Club Coach. This showed how strong Barcelona was as a team.
Winning the FIFA Club World Cup
On December 16, Pedro made history. He became the first player ever to score in six different club competitions in a single season! He scored in La Liga, Copa del Rey, UEFA Champions League, UEFA Super Cup, Spanish Super Cup, and the FIFA Club World Cup.
Just three days later, on December 19, Barcelona won the FIFA Club World Cup. They beat Estudiantes from Argentina 2–1 in the final. This victory was special because it meant Barcelona had won all six major trophies in 2009. This amazing achievement is known as The Sextuple.
