Rafael Márquez Álvarez (born on February 13, 1979) is a famous Mexican football player and coach. He used to play as a defender. People often called him El Káiser, which means "The Emperor." Many consider him the best defender in Mexico's history. He is also one of the greatest Mexican players ever. Currently, he works as an assistant coach for the Mexico national team.

Márquez started his football journey with Atlas in 1996. He played over 70 games for them. In 1999, he moved to France to play for Monaco, where he helped them win a Ligue 1 title. In 2003, Márquez made history by joining Barcelona. He was the first Mexican player to ever play for this famous club.

During his seven seasons with Barcelona, he played more than 240 games. He won many important trophies, including four La Liga titles and two UEFA Champions League titles. In 2006, he became the first Mexican player to win the Champions League. This happened when Barcelona beat Arsenal in the final game.

After leaving Barcelona in 2010, Márquez played for the Major League Soccer team New York Red Bulls. In 2012, he returned to Mexico to play for León. He was the team captain and led them to win two Liga MX titles in a row in 2013 and 2014. Later, he played for Hellas Verona in Italy. He returned to his first club, Atlas, in 2015 and retired from playing football in April 2018.

Rafael Márquez is one of the most experienced players for the Mexico national football team. He played 147 games for his country. In 2018, he became one of only four players in history to play in five different FIFA World Cup tournaments. He played in the World Cups of 2002, 2006, 2010, 2014, and 2018. He also holds the record for the most World Cup matches played by a Mexican player, with 19 games. With the national team, Márquez won the 1999 FIFA Confederations Cup and the CONCACAF Gold Cup in 2003 and 2011.

Playing for Clubs

Starting with Atlas

Márquez began his professional career with Atlas. He played his first game in October 1996 when he was just 17 years old. He quickly became a key player for Atlas. He played 77 games for the team. In 1999, his team reached the league final but lost on penalties.

Moving to Monaco

After playing for Mexico in the 1999 Copa América, Márquez moved to the French club Monaco. This move cost about US$6 million. He played his first game for Monaco on August 14 against Bastia. In his first season (1999–2000), Monaco won the Ligue 1 title. Márquez was even named in the league's Team of the Season. He played 109 matches for Monaco over four seasons. He also helped them win the Coupe de la Ligue in 2003.

On November 9, he scored his first goal for Barcelona in a 2–1 win. In his first season, Barcelona finished second in the league.

In his second season, he sometimes played as a defensive midfielder. This happened because other players were injured. In May 2005, Barcelona won its 17th league title. During the 2007–08 season, Márquez often played alongside Gabriel Milito. This was because captain Carles Puyol was injured. However, Márquez also had many injuries. This affected his performance and Barcelona finished third in the league. Still, the new coach Pep Guardiola trusted him. Márquez was the last player remaining from the Frank Rijkaard era. In October 2007, he was nominated for the FIFA World Player of the Year award. He was the only player from the CONCACAF region to be nominated.
