Maicon Douglas Sisenando (born 26 July 1981), known simply as Maicon, is a former Brazilian footballer who played as a right-back. He was known for his speed, strong shots, and great crosses. Many people thought he was one of the best right-backs of his time.

Maicon started his football journey in Brazil with clubs like Grêmio and Criciúma as a young player. He then played for Cruzeiro from 2000 to 2004, winning a national league title. After that, he moved to Europe, joining Ligue 1 team Monaco.

In 2006, Maicon signed with Inter Milan in Italy. This is where he became a famous player, helping Inter win the UEFA Champions League in 2010, four Serie A titles, and the FIFA Club World Cup. Later, he played for Manchester City in England and Roma in Italy before returning to Brazil. He retired from professional football in 2021.

Maicon also played for the Brazil national team 76 times, scoring seven goals. He helped Brazil win the Copa América twice (in 2004 and 2007) and the FIFA Confederations Cup twice (in 2005 and 2009). He also played in two FIFA World Cup tournaments.

Maicon's Club Career Highlights

Starting His Journey in Brazil

Maicon began his professional career with Cruzeiro in 2001. He quickly showed his talent as a right-sided player who could attack and defend. After two successful seasons in Brazil, where he even got called up to the Brazil national team, he moved to Europe. In June 2004, he joined Monaco in France.

Becoming a Star at Inter Milan

Joining Inter and Early Success (2006–2009)

In July 2006, Maicon joined Inter Milan in Italy. He quickly became a key player, known for his strong defense and powerful runs down the right side of the field. He often set up goals or scored them himself with his powerful right foot. He became the first-choice right-back, even taking the spot from Inter's captain, Javier Zanetti. Many people thought he was one of the best wing-backs in the world.

Maicon helped Inter win their fourth straight Serie A title in the 2008–09 season. He scored important goals, including two in one match against Siena.

Winning the Treble (2009–2010 Season)

The 2009–10 season was amazing for Maicon and Inter Milan. He started by scoring a goal in a huge 4–0 win against Milan. He continued to play strongly, scoring a fantastic goal against Juventus by juggling the ball over a defender and then volleying it into the net.

Maicon scored his first UEFA Champions League goal against Barcelona in a famous victory for Inter. He even lost a tooth after a collision with Lionel Messi in that game! Inter went on to win the Champions League, beating Bayern Munich in the final. They also won the Serie A title and the Coppa Italia, completing a historic "treble" (winning three major trophies in one season). Maicon was named the best defender in the Champions League that year.

Final Season with Inter (2011–2012)

In the 2011–12 season, Maicon played 23 games in Serie A. He scored two goals, including a powerful shot from outside the box in a 4–2 win against Milan.

Time at Manchester City

On 31 August 2012, Maicon moved to Manchester City in England. He played his first game for City on 15 September. However, he struggled with injuries and found it hard to get a regular spot in the team. He couldn't replace Pablo Zabaleta as the main right-back. After one season, he left the club.

Playing for Roma in Italy

Maicon returned to Italy on 18 July 2013, joining Roma on his 32nd birthday. Roma had a fantastic start to the 2013–14 season, winning their first ten Serie A games. Maicon played his first game for Roma on 25 August.

He scored his first goal for Roma on 8 December in a 2–1 home win against Fiorentina. He scored again in 2014 in a 4–0 win against Genoa. In October 2014, Maicon signed a new contract to stay with Roma until June 2016.

Returning to Brazil

On 31 May 2017, Maicon signed with Brazilian club Avaí. This marked his return to Brazilian football after 13 years in Europe. In December 2017, Maicon announced his retirement after playing one season with Avaí.

However, in December 2018, Maicon decided to play again! He signed a one-year contract with Criciúma, a club he played for as a youth. He said his son was one of the reasons he came back to football.

In September 2020, Maicon joined Villa Nova. Then, in January 2021, he moved to Italy again to play for Sona, a club in Serie D. His last club was Tre Penne in San Marino, where he played two games in the UEFA Europa Conference League.

On 7 May 2023, Maicon officially announced his retirement from professional football.
