Konrad Ackermann: A German Actor
Konrad Ackermann was a key figure in German theater during the 18th century. He helped shape how plays were performed and enjoyed. His acting troupe traveled widely, bringing theater to many cities.
Early Life and Beginnings
Konrad Ackermann was born in Schwerin on February 1, 1710. Before becoming an actor, he traveled with Field Marshal Burkhard Christoph von Münnich. This experience likely gave him a broad view of the world.
He first started acting under a director named Stolle. In 1740, he joined the acting group of Johann Friedrich Schönemann in Lüneburg. Here, he met Sophie Charlotte Bierreichel, who would become his wife.
Founding the Ackermann Troupe
Sophie Charlotte Bierreichel took over Schönemann's troupe in Hamburg in 1741. However, the group broke up in 1744. Konrad and Sophie lived with Konrad's relatives in Mecklenburg for a few years.
In 1747, Konrad found work as an actor in Danzig. Later, he moved to St. Petersburg in Russia. He and Sophie visited Moscow in 1749, where they got married. They left Russia in 1751. After returning to Germany, they decided to start their own acting company. This new group was called the Ackermann troupe (Ackermann'sche Gesellschaft).
Travels and Performances
The Ackermann troupe became very active, performing in many cities. They visited places like Danzig, Königsberg, Breslau, and Warsaw. They also performed in German cities such as Leipzig, Halle, and Frankfurt.
When the Seven Years' War began, the troupe traveled to Switzerland for safety. They went through Strasbourg, France, to get there. After the war ended, they returned to Germany. Their journey back took them through Strasbourg, Frankfurt, Mainz, Braunschweig, and Hanover.
Eventually, the troupe settled in Hamburg. This city became their main home base. Many talented actors joined the Ackermann troupe during this time. These included Johann Michael Böck and Friederike Sophie Seyler. They stayed with the troupe until it was sold in 1767.
The Hamburg National Theatre
In 1767, the Ackermann troupe was sold to a group of private owners. This new organization was known as the Hamburg National Theatre. It was also called the Hamburgische Entreprise. The famous writer Gotthold Ephraim Lessing worked with this theater. His ideas about drama were very important.
The Hamburg National Theatre became a home for many great German actors. These included Friedrich Ludwig Schröder and Konrad Ekhof. In 1769, many of Ackermann's actors joined the Seyler theatrical company. This shows how influential the Ackermann troupe had been.
Family Life
Konrad Ackermann and Sophie Charlotte had two daughters together. Their names were Dorothea and Marie Ackermann. Both of them also became actors, following in their parents' footsteps.
