History of Krompachy
Early Beginnings
The town of Krompachy was first mentioned in official records in 1282. This was in a document from King Ladislaus IV. The document said that Krompachy belonged to the area around Spiš Castle. The town's name comes from German words, meaning "crooked stream." This is because German settlers helped build the town.
Mining and Metal Industry
For many centuries, Krompachy was a major center for mining and making metal. They focused especially on iron and copper. In the early 1900s, the Krompachy Ironworks was huge. It had about 3,500 workers and was the biggest iron factory in the Kingdom of Hungary. However, the Ironworks closed after World War I.
Important Events
In 1921, there was a big event called the Krompachy Uprising (Slovak: Krompašská vzbura). It was a difficult time for the town.
Modern Times and Tourism
After 1991, the town's industries changed. There was a lot of money invested in the Plejsy ski center. This made Plejsy an internationally popular place for alpine skiing. Krompachy then became known as a great holiday spot.
